90 grain Sierra Match King's at 1,018 yards

Went back up today, that tail wind kept making 140smks skim the top of the target at 750, I'd adjust and the wind would stop as I pulled the trigger. 142s were soaking it right up, dinging the shit out of the 1/4 there. Made a few hits at 1000, but w/o a spotter the wind was making it tough. You can see when you hit and you can see your splashes, but at that distance, at such a small target, it's tough to tell exactly where the splash was. So I mostly stuck to the 750.

At least for the .223, the bullet is in flight so long that the wind changed on me after I released the shot and still affected its flight. Based on my reading to date, the heavier bullets are better with the wind but .223 is less than ideal. That just makes it more challenging to shoot and more rewarding when I hit. [smile]

.223 AR's will shoot pretty well at 1000 yards. As much as I like the 80 grain Sierras for 600 yards, I never thought the Sierra 90's shoot well, I used JLK 90's out of a Krieger 6.5 twist barrel.

80 & 90 grain Sierra Match King's at 1,015 yards

We went back to Granby last week for more 1,000 yard plinking. Two AR15's: My White Oak 20" and a 20" HBAR.
The wind started light and easy then picked up as the day went on and the sun position changed.
I think the hardest part is that between 950 and 1,022 yards there is a clearing. The wind whips across this clearing and buffets the bullet at its most vulnerable point.

Oh, and a little SVD action at 800 yards. That sucker kicks a lot more than you would expect for a semi auto DMR.

I brought three sets of 100 rounds increasing in powder. The 24 grain max load did the best.

I forgot to mention yardage from the first photo:

Hotel is 911 yards
India is 950 yards
Juliet is 1,018 +/- 5 yards

I think we all can assume the White Oak did well. How was the HBAR? I had a pre Fed ban HBAR years ago and never could get it to shoot well. One gun I don't regret selling. I have a 7.62x54R VEPR with POSP scope that lacks the cool factor of the SVD but is a great fun gun. Probably not 1000 yard material.

What type of brass prep do you typically do? Anything beyond trimming to correct case length? Just curious if brass prep is much of an issue.

You running SWFAs on both rifles?

No, the HBAR has a Mark 4 6-24 on it. Funny story: MIL reticle & MOA turrets make for bad adjustments without doing some math. On the bright side, Leupold is going to swap out the turrets so the scope is MIL/MIL.

That's really cool.

How'd the SVD with PPU ammo do? Was it the 182 gr match?

Yes on the match ammo. It hit a wall around 800 yards and just dropped like a rock. Past that it was indirect mortar fire and about as accurate.

Since it is so light, it kicks pretty good and the Russian scope has almost no eye relief. Thankfully there is a rubber boot on the scope or I would have got a black eye from the first shot. The rest I tucked that stock in and leaned against the bipod and all was good.

He had a lot of trouble developing loads with the HBAR, it appears to be very finicky with ammo. It does like the 90 grain SMK's and I think he got some 3/4 MOA groups from it at 100 yards. That put him pretty easily on target for a steel silhouette at 1,018 yards.

Drop is 380-400" for the 90 grain SMK starting at ~2650 FPS.

Brass prep: I know that everyone loves LC. I use the ZQI once fired brass from the same gun. Case consistency is amazing and they are still within length tolerance after the first firing (which I can't say about Lake City). I use the EZ Trim-it II for case trimming but I have so much once fired ZQI brass that I may never get to trimming. I also have 5,000 rounds of it unfired so...

Bad adjustments to say the least. Although I do own a US Optics ERGO that is Mil rec and MOA adjustment. I am use to it and I refuse to part with it BUT all my others are Mil/Mil. That's pretty good of Lepauld.

Oh I never said they were doing it for free. [emoji51]

For a reference, my final string of ten shots had seven impacting an IPSC silhouette at 1,018 yards with a tail wind and two crosswinds. I'm damn happy with those results.

One of the more interesting parts of the day was shooting a Finish Tika M91 out to 1000yds. I never hit the target, but was dancing a few yards around it on the berm. I plan on developing a 7.62x54R around a 174gr load to work out to 1000.

That's really cool.

I have had some very good luck with PPU ammo, but for this the 182gr is too heavy and slow for 1000. Though inside of 800yds it was very accurate.
