It is really worth to re-post, as, nothing is more classic than that.
you are lost. you have reception. you`ve made a call for rescue.
but a smarty ass you, you do not stay in same spot where GPS pinged you, you venture forth on your own with phone turned off and end up DEAD.
because you knew better.

That guy and his dog were out there for 6 days. He was probably disoriented, dehydrated, malnourished and most likely not of sound mind, plus he was 74 y/o. Hiking alone in a 1.25 million acre forest is not a very prudent thing to do, especially at his age.

Happens a lot.

As soon as you think you are lost.....YOU ARE. STOP, stay in one place and start improving your immediate situation. Dump your pack, inventory what you have, and start planning for a stay. Water and shelter from the elements are most important. Unless you've got underlying medical conditions, you can go without food for a very long time.
Lots of people are found dead because they panic and move from bad to worse and fear overtakes their rational thinking.

what always escapes my comprehension - an every smartphone now has google maps with a working compass, iphone or android - the same.
how difficult is it to just download a map of the territory you are going to explore? you literally cannot get lost with this thing. i always have it when we go hiking in white mountains, it is amazingly handy to have, and it has most (major) hiking trails indicated on it as well.
