I was zero'ing an AK recently and used a tool to screw the post down to correct for low impact. I ran out of adjustment in that the sight post is fully bottomed out and is still about 2in low on paper. Are there different heights of front sight posts available or would it be fine to file the front post down to allow more vertical adjustment?

Maybe not relevant but I'll add it cause someone might ask:

Distance was 25m, Ammo is Tula Surplus, AK is a built pistol

Sighting was done with it securely benched, holding a great group, just 2-3 in low of where I want it to be.

Just a fun range blaster, future plans are to SBR it.

I raised the rear sight and that'll work, but I wanted the rear sight leaf to have some semblance of meaning, ie 100, 200 ect and be at least on a silloutte at the selected range that the rear leaf is adjusted to. I later searched and found tons of options for front sight posts for pretty short money so for now I'm going to file it down a bit and if Im not happy, then buy a variety pack of them from midway. Ideally I'd have it zeroed at 100 with the front sight post mechanically zeroed in the middle of its adjustment range.

The rear sight is made for a full sized barrel. A shorter barrel will will require a different ramp profile.

Is the rear at battle? Not sure what that means. The rear is set to 100. Are there OEM/surplus rear sights specific to pistol length barrels?

Not really since what you probably have is not a official model .

If you had a "krink" type of gun the rear sight would be on the dust cover .

Most ak pistols are custom made from standard part kits .

I sent you a pic a bit back in regards to this same pistol. It was about which folding stock would work for it in an SBR configuration.

Im just looking for minute of bad guy accuracy here where I can reasonably expect to hit out to 200 is all.

Lol I cleared out my mail box . I forget what gun you have .
If it's the normal spot your kinda out of luck and need to adjust the rear forwards to comp .
Is it normal gas length pistol? If so I think there is a useable rear block .
Post a picture.

What ammo and what velocities are you getting with this pistol AK. What's the sight radius.
From rear of rear sight to front sight post.

Does your rear sight have the D setting below the 100m setting. That's the "battle" setting.
Again this is rough zero and will differ slightly for ammo and velocity but should get you close.
I did a little testing on my rear sight elevation after I zeroed it for 100 yards set on 1 on rear sight.
From 1-2 setting it raised the impact about 3" at 100 yards. 2-3 was approx 10". 3-4 I was shooting over the target frame at 100..so about 13+" ?

Also here is the sight height correction formula.

Amount of error or correction needed X sight radius divided by distance to target in inches = front sight correction needed.
So if you shooting 25m
2" correction x 8" (inset actual sight radius) =16"/984"= .016" in,your case shorter front sight to get 2" rise on bullet impact.
Now your average x39 round out of a standard length AK barrel.
For a 200 yard battle zero....place rear sight all the way back to the last notch or "battle" setting.
Mine looks like a n or it can be a D and I have seen one with a 3 ?
Now take a 3 shot group at 25 yards. At 25 yards the center of your group should be about .5" low of point of aim this will give you close to point of aim point of impact at 200 yards.
With impact being approx 3.5" high at 100.
So this setting and zero will give you minute of bad guy without changing sight setting or aim point from 0-225ish yards.

Thanks for all the info fellas. I'll get more detailed info next time I take it to the range. I'll take my chrono along and try to get some numbers. I don't believe there is a "D" setting on the rear sight, but then I haven't looked that close, and if I did see it, might have thought it was an inspectors stamp or something.

Depending on the country who made the rear sight it will have a different mark .
