I got this today CC'd to me from my buddy, SkySoldier, who did two tours in Vietnam, one with the 101'st, and one with the 173Airborne. I share many of the sentiments he spoke of, and I thought I'd pass it on. I am not "Spyshark"
Skyshark......I have so many thoughts here that I don't know where to start.
Our involvement in Vietnam was an attempt to stop communist aggression in
southeast Asia. Innocent people were being murdered in the name of
communism, and we were the only ones who had the power to stop it.
Unfortunately, the majority of American people had become so complacent that
they refused to realize that there was a threat. They cared more about
themselves than people in Vietnam and southeast Asia.
The American soldiers never lost a battle in Vietnam.....but popular opinion
here in America caused us to withdraw from the fight....and millions of
Vietnamese suffered for it. (I personnaly think the only people that
appreciated our involvement in Vietnam were the south Vietnamese.)
Our involvement in the middle east is about stopping terrorist agression in
the middel east.....where genocide is just as rampant as it was in Vietnam.
And again, we are the only country with the power to stop it.
And, unfortunately, Americans have become more blind to it! Even with the
events of 9-11, the American people have become more complacent and blind to
the reality of hatred and genocide around the world.
And like Vietnam, I sense that the only people that really appreciate our
involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan are the people that live there.
I have no problem saying that the war in Iraq is like the war in Vietnam.
And if the American people don't wake the f*** up and realize it soon, a lot
of people in Iraq will end up in re-education camps like the Vietnamese did.
And we will have more incidents like 9-11.
To me, the problems lies in the weakness of the American populace to stand
up for what is right and just.
We have a better military than we did back in Vietnam, and they also have
the advantage of technology that we didn't have in Vietnam.
I don't think it has anything to do with whether the President is a Democrat
or a Republican. Presidents do what the people want them to do.
Nixon was the first to authorize our troops to go into Cambodia....and
finally brought the North Vietnamese to the peace talks.....but he still
bowed to the will of the American people and gave up the fight.
We as a people need to decide if we want to be the same Americans that
responded to Pearl Harbor......or like the ones that responded to the Tet
offensive of 1968.
