I was looking over the thread on coyotes and also going over the Maine Wildlife Department's hunting page.

It looks like it's pretty much open season on coyotes and that they're decimating the deer and small game population up there. The family has a pretty large plot of land up near Bethel and I was interested in some coyote hunting.

1. What's the process for getting a fur from a coyote tanned? I've never done it and it would be a shame to waste it.

2. Is there anything I should know about out of state permits? (The state's website isn't very clear)

Any info would be much appreciated.

-Thanks -Bill

#2 You just need to get a non-resident hunting license. Night hunting permit is an extra $4 I think (night hunting is limited to certain dates).

#1 Some guys send out the hides to be professionally done, others do it themselves. No info on doing it yourself.

Ive used the do it yourself kits on critters like raccoon, otter, beaver and such but I have sent many larger hides such as deer, bear and African animals to this company.

They do a great job but you cant be in a hurry. The hides will come back to you soft and pliable, like a blanket.

I have used the home tanning kits from companies such as Van Dyke's taxidermy supplies http://www.vandykestaxidermy.com/ and had good and bad results. If you want a good final product when you do it yourself you will need to learn other steps of the process like stretching and fleshing/scraping.
