Getting into cleaning up and appreciating my heirloom collection and next up is my grandfather’s JC Higgins model 50 30-06
From what I gather it’s a commercial Big Ring Mauser action.
Anyway the safety is broken/missing and I’m having a hard time tracking down the parts.

At one point over a decade ago I thought I found the parts at Numrich but they now only list 6 parts for the rifle 😂

Can anyone tell me what I’m missing or point me in a direction where to look?

Flag safety latch/lever.

I thought I would have a link. I do not unfortunately. You might be able to buy a used bolt and tale what you need from it. They were made by FN so there may be some cross fitting parts

Thanks that’s a direction on Search terms

I’m sure there are cross references I’ve read a little on it but I guess it’s time to learn the world of Mauser.

The problem is the more I learn the model I’ll want more of them in my life lol

I grabbed 3 mausers in the last 2 weeks. I get it. Learning mausers is worth it. Many consider it the perfect bolt design. And there are so many milsurp options. Cheap and expensive. The ammo not so much

Yeah hand loading seems to be a necessity with the older bigger calibers

I loaded up some .308 the other night and watching the powder drop with each charge was giving me anxiety lol.

I have a pile of 30-06 brass primers powder etc this was one of the first rifles I acquired decades ago when I got my license, I shot it a bit till I got into ARs and battle rifles and I’m finally circling back
I’d like to put a nice scope on it and clean it up a bit

Hoosier Arms has some commercial Mauser parts, IIRC. Going to be a roll of the dice with the small parts suppliers, I'm afraid.

I've handled some nice jc Higgins 50s, well worth keeping and restoring.

Thanks, I’ll never get rid of it it was my grandfather’s deer rifle. It just sat in the corner of the safe neglected and unloved for the last 15 years.
Shooting it at the range is fine but I’d really like the safety if I ever get the chance to hunt with it in the future

I forgot to add before that I think timiny makes a low scope safety for them. I'm sure at double the cost

Another possibility is Gunbroker - tough part is determining what actually will work on your rifle.

Gunbroker Parts Search - mauser safety

There have been commercial conversions of the original Mauser safety, some of which show up in the GB search. Whether they will work is a more difficult question, it may end up that you buy various safeties just to see if any will fit. Some of those auctions are cheap enough that try it and see makes sense.

This is what your looking for. Albeit out of stock here. I'm not sure if all mauser 98 flag safeties work in the 50. But they came with low scope safeties
That particular safety is usually very soft and very quickly will disengage by accident. The timney safety is usually the best two position safety if you don't want to deal with the wisner's install.

The gentry Winchester 70 style safety is something I do a lot in my shop. The Meyers arms ones are a bit better made but about twice the price.
