Really neat piece. Frame is smaller than J frame. It's kinda weird but nice. The bluing on the frame that did not wear is really nice.

Built solidly. This one is a flat latch 4" Model marked 34 so it seems that it should be from 1957/1958. Five digit serial 383xx. Grips are not original, they are the target relieved that converts round butt into square.

Does anyone know if regular j frame grips fit? I'd like to find a set of sq btt diamonds for it.

Anyone else have one?

Wait for Depicts to find this thread or ping him. He's a local expert on these guns.

I bought one recently and would like to change grips. Bill advised me that J-frame grips won't fit an I-frame and all my searching has turned up nothing in I-frame grips so far.

Thanks for the Gbroker link. Nice grips with diamonds but I need a set with Square butt. I think these are a bit harder to find.

I'm actually liking the targets so I may not have to get the magnas but knowing myself, it will just be a matter of time for another set of grips to appear.

Oh, I thought you were looking for for round butt grips, which more likely would be original equipment.

That's one nice looking firearm.

I've been told the I frame grips and frame are 1/8" smaller than a jframe.

I don't have an I frame.

I want an I frame.

I do have a spare set of mint square butt jframe diamonds.

The shape of the grips is dependent on the shape of the frame. Round butt grips will not fit a square butt frame...and vice versa.

pj, J frame grips won't fit. You can get square butt, diamond grips to fit the I frame, as they were used on the model 30 and others, so they are around.

A PRE model marked, like the Model of 1953 .22/.32 Kit gun with with a cylinder length of 1.32 inches, is an I frame. If the cylinder is 1.44 inches, it's a J frame.

There are great stocks available for this gun that fit either round butt or square butt. I have some square butt targets I like a lot. J frame grips will not fit your gun.

Thanks for the informative lesson.

I'm getting used to the targets and now that I think about it, having the regular magnas on there will look good but I'd still have to put a T grip on it.

I didn't think I would like this as I was really looking for a K frame like a 17,18 or a newer 617. I always wondered why these were called 'kit guns' but after handling it, I can see why it was a pack gun. Now I don't think I will want a K frame in 22RF.

I can't even lie straight on an internet forum...[wink]

I really do want a K frame 22 but darn they are hard to find at the right price and not so beat up condition.

I heard about a guy on here (not naming names) who just picked up a K22 for less than half a grand. A good buy I'd say.

If you're ever in the area, I'll let you shoot a K22 Masterpiece, a Model 17 and a Model 18. It MIGHT pique your willingness to spend.
