I was at Northeast Trading the otherday picking up 357 ammo and noticed that Speer makes Golddot 22 magnum rounds. I dont know much about 22 magnum so I thought that was pretty cool. I looked in the case and they had a S&W 351PD j-frame 7-shot 22mag revolver.

Anyone had any experience with this gun/ammo combo? what are the ballistics of a 22 mag from a snubbie? I figured the stats would be pretty dismal. Does anyone make a fullsize 22mag revolver? I know of the S&W 617 22LR but do or have they ever made a 617-Magnum?
No particular reason for wanting a 22mag, just curious about its ballistics and available handguns for the cartridge. Thanks.

I have this little guy in 22mag:

Its a nice little round with a real jacketed bullet

The Ruger single six revolvers come with cylinders for both .22 LR and .22 mag. Excellent and very accurate revolvers. I have used one for many years of raccoon hunting (God bless those bluetick hounds) and have taken fox, coyote and woodchuck with it. The .22 Mag actually has more energy than the old .38 S&W cartridge.

My wife and I both have the 351PD. It's a great gun and barks like a much larger gun but much less recoil as you can imagine. I wish that there was a 617 in 22 magnum! I love the 617 and can only imagine chambered in 22magnum it would be even better.

As for "full size" revolver, there are a number of new and used options. Most are not available to us in MA unfortunately. Ruger and Taurus both make guns in 22 Magnum. The Ruger is the Single-six and as it's name suggests is a single-action (with the requisite single round load/unload).

Taurus currently makes the 941 and 991 in 22 magnum that holds 9 shots. Almost the 617, but not quite.

As for used guns, there are a number of them. S&W made a few (448 or 648?) and Colt also.

We love the 22 magnum. It is very much an under appreciated round. I've got my eye out for the Taurus, S&W and Colt if anyone has any leads.

There is a charter arms revolver as well. I don't know much about it.

ETA: A LEO we met at the range one day had the 351PD and we talked for a while about it. It was his backup gun.

I have a 351pd and its my daily cary gun. 10.6 onces and fits in my pocket. I also shoot my single six quite a bit. I have a Marlin 25mn bolt gun in .22 mag also. Great little coyote rig.

My wife's got a 351PD. Fun gun but the trigger's stout in DA, and very light in SA. She prefers it to carrying her SP101 while walking the woods, and now I've got a reason to pick up a .22WMR rifle.

I've got a H&R 676 in .22MAG with a spare .22LR cylinder.

.22 Mag out of a revolver (5 1/2" barrel) is LOUD. Fun too. Its mainly a range toy.

I have a Ruger Single Six which comes with both a .22LR and .22WMR cylinder. I have yet to shoot any .22WMR with it though, been meaning to pick some up.

Since we're on the subject of .22 mag, I really like CCI maxi-mags. Locally about $10/50 rounds. I have tried Winchester Super X .22mag with crappy results. Many rounds took two to four strikes to fire.

Yeah my dad has a Single Six and i shoot it often and we just got magnum rounds. They look little but probably pack a punch. They're 40 grain bullets and are like a 1/4" longer than the .22 LR. I can't wait to shoot some! I have a range in my basement where we shoot .22 Super Colibri 20 grain powderless rounds but we're waiting for the range to shoot the magnums. I'd like to know more info about these bullets if anyone knows about them. Keep shooting!

Thanks for all the replies, I think I'm hooked now and want something in 22mag. dans, you mention you carry your 351PD for defense, I've always wondered about the reliability of rimfire rounds. What load do you carry? are you at all aprehensive about getting lots of duds? I assume the cheap rounds have duds in the packs just like the 22LR (think Win SuperX) but I imagine the Federal or Speer or CCI's are made to much higher quality control?
I'll be looking around for those other 22mag revolvers you mentioned.

Oh and fbird...that NAA Pug is sweet!

Nice thing about a revolver, if you have a dud, you just pull the trigger again and cycle to the next round. You have to remember though, that it is still a 22, and its only going to expand so much out of such a short barrel. I like my Hi Standard Revolver in 22mag/22lr - but mainly for a packable survival gun for hiking.

I've got a Davis derringer in .22Mag and an NAA Mini in .22Mag (with a .22LR cylinder, too). I wouldn't mind a 351, either - it's on my gun lust list (but several models down, alas, unless I can talk a certain NESer out of his).

The Ruger is the Single-six and as it's name suggests is a single-action (with the requisite single round load/unload).

This be heresy, I know, but I will observe that Ruger has a transfer bar system on their single action revolvers (and has for many years, too), so it's probably perfectly safe to carry hammer down on a loaded chamber. (Mind you, I'm NOT advising anyone to do so as I don't feel like getting sued for a freakin' internet post! However... if I had one, I'd probably do it. Now... where are my Nomex Underoos... [flame])

We use CCI in our 351PDs. We have tried some Remington, but not a lot. We have fired many hundreds of rounds and haven't had one dud. YMMV.

I haven't tried them, but I was told the Hornady Critical Defense in 22 magnum are very good. Let me know if you find them.
