This occurred in Georgia on an AT side trail which bypassed the peak of a mountain. My wife's liberal friends wonder why I carry while hiking.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Police are looking for a man described as a "person of interest," in the case of a 24-year-old woman who has been missing in the north Georgia mountains since New Year's Day, a Union County Sheriff's spokeswoman told reporters Thursday.

Several eyewitnesses saw Gary Michael Hilton, 61, and his reddish dog with Meredith Emerson before she disappeared, investigator Kimberly Verdone said.

Verdone earlier described the man as about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing about 160 pounds, and said he was seen with Emerson on "multiple occasions" on Tuesday along the Freeman Trail on Blood Mountain.

Emerson, originally from Colorado, was hiking the trail with her black Labrador retriever on Tuesday, Verdone said.

She was reported missing Wednesday.

"At one time they were seen talking and let the dogs run loose; the dogs ran up the mountain, and they followed them afterwards," she said of the man and Emerson.

She also described the man as having "bad" or "no teeth," and wearing a yellow jacket with a "large, older backpack," that someone would "use for a couple of days," she said.

He also had a "sheath of some sorts" attached to one leg, but Verdone said she did not know what it contained. Watch Verdone describe man police want to find »

The man's dog responded to the name "Dandy," not "Danny" as police originally reported, she said.

One eyewitness noted the license plate on a 2001 Ford Astro minivan registered to Hilton in DeKalb County, Georgia, Verdone said. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation found a second white 1996 Astro van registered to Hilton, also in DeKalb County. Police released the tag numbers and asked people to be on the lookout for either vehicle, she said.

Authorities in DeKalb County, however, said Hilton is not believed to reside in the county.

Police and dozens of volunteers hiked into the cold mountains for a second day Thursday to search for Emerson, a University of Georgia alumna, Verdone said. Emerson family spokeswoman Peggy Bailey said the girl's father was among the volunteers.

Authorities are making "every effort to find Meredith," Verdone said. The search Thursday would continue until dusk, she said.

A Georgia State Police helicopter was also flying over the area, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was also assisting in the search, Verdone said.

At an earlier Thursday news conference, Verdone said police have confirmed that a water bottle and a leash found in the area belonged to Emerson. The young woman's vehicle also was found at the head of the 6-mile Freedom Trail -- which is part of the Appalachian Trail -- Verdone told CNN Wednesday.

Emerson's roommate, Julia Karrenbauer, told CNN Thursday that Emerson's sunglasses and mittens were found in the area, as was a baton.

Verdone did not confirm those reports. She said Emerson, whom she described as "familiar with hiking," had been dressed for the cold weather on Tuesday.

Bailey described the blonde, 5-foot-4, 120-pound woman as "athletic," "feisty" and "level-headed."

"Meredith Emerson could do anything," she said. "I'm praying hard."

Bailey said Emerson's parents flew to Georgia Wednesday night from Colorado. They are "devastated and frightened," she said. "They're waiting as we all are."

Verdone urged people with information regarding the young woman or the "person of interest" to call (706) 439 - 6038.

It is not officially a killing but things do indeed look grim. Even though I have a fairly large German Shepherd dog (60 pounds and still growing), I always carry when I go hiking. You just never know who or what may come out of the woods.

Really.

And just where in the story do the words "killing," "murder," "corpse," "body" or their equivalents appear?

You have a unique outlook on life. Let's look at the facts:

She was last seen with a toothless hillbilly with a sheath knife strapped to his leg.

Her bloody clothes and wallet were found in a garbage can.

Her dog was found wandering around aimlessly.

She's been missing for 5 days.

In my world that means she's dead.

More info has come out today:

Hilton was arrested later Friday at a different convenience store in metro Atlanta. When his 2001 minivan was searched, agents "determined that the rear seat belt had been cut out," according to the warrant.

"Hilton was attempting to vacuum the vehicle and wash portions of it with a bleach and water solution," the warrant says. It also alleges that Hilton attempted to use one of Emerson's credit cards at a Regions Bank branch in Canton, Georgia.

I guess you would explain the cut out seat belt as irrelevant. Perhaps he's just OCD and that's why he cleans the interior of his car with bleach. Maybe, a poor college student just happened to loan her credit card to a hillbilly.

I guess you're correct. She can't be dead.

I think a reasonable person would think it far more likely than not that this young woman is dead. Whether this guy did it or not is a matter for a jury to decide.

From the witnesses it seems like he's the guy. He finds her body and people say they saw them together before she went missing?????? [thinking]

Sad story...the AT has been a pretty safe place for even solo female hikers for years and years....time to start packin' when hikin'!

Maine authorities still seek AT hiker 2 years after disappearance

Geraldine Largay, of Brentwood, Tennessee, last was seen on the early morning of July 22, 2013, at Poplar Lean-to on the Appalachian Trail in Maine, according to state wardens. Largay, whose trail name was “Inchworm,” reportedly planned a hike that day to Spaulding Lean-to in Redington Township, roughly 8 miles to the north, Maine Warden Service Cpl. John MacDonald said. The following day, she planned to continue hiking north from Spaulding Lean-to located in Mount Abram Township to meet her husband, who was waiting for her at the Route 27 crossing, MacDonald said. A reward in the amount to $25,000 remains available for anyone who can provide information that leads to locating Largay, he said. Anyone who has information that may result in finding Largay or information about other hikers or people in the Poplar Lean-to or Oberton Stream areas on the Appalachian Trail on July 22, 2013, is asked to contact the Maine Warden Service at 624-7076.

Federal law allows people who can legally possess firearms under applicable federal, state, and local laws, to legally possess firearms on portions of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (see our Laws and Policies section with Firearms Information and Q&A). Along with any distance hikers and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, we discourage the carrying of firearms (see the Conservancy's website for additional information about trail safety). The threat of firearms being turned against you or an accidental shooting outweighs the benefit. An increased presence of firearms could also change the culture of the Trail. State laws vary on the carrying of nonlethal weapons, such as pepper spray. The possession and use of a defensive weapon is a responsibility not to be taken lightly and one with potentially serious consequences. Instead, a whistle may scare off a potential threat from humans or animals and will serve to alert others in the area to your location.

"a whistle may scare off a potential threat from humans or animals and will serve to alert others in the area to your location"

I'm torn between:

1) So will a gunshot.
and
2) Suggesting the victim make ugly faces or piss on themselves.

I hope this douche bag gets what he deserves! Having a daughter of my own...this sort of thing bothers me.

I know this is old but I was happy to see they got a confession out of the POS.

Conviction[edit]

On January 30, 2008, Gary Hilton pleaded guilty to the murder of Emerson. He was sentenced to life in prison with a chance of parole in 30 years. Hilton was later linked to and then charged with three additional murders; the October 2007 murders of elderly couple John and Irene Bryant in North Carolina, and the December 2007 murder of 46-year-old nurse Cheryl Dunlap in Florida. In 2011, Hilton was tried for Dunlap's murder and was sentenced to death. [SUP][11][/SUP] In 2012, Hilton pleaded guilty to the kidnapping and murder of the Bryants and was sentenced to life in prison.[SUP][12[/SUP]

"An increased presence of firearms could also change the culture of the trail".

I don't even know where to begin.

Lol that's hilarious considering many people probably discreetly carry on the AT (or other hiking trails wherever, in america) and nobody really notices anything. [rofl]

I have talked to people that hike the trail and also read discussions about it on other forums. People that are normally pro gun get all loopy when the subject of carrying on the A.T. comes up. Like it is some sacrilegious act against nature. I don't understand the attitude and think its foolish to be miles into the woods along a well known hiking trail with no protection.

Yup, always have one on me.

Conceal - verb (used with object)

Ive seen tent cities in the middle of no where. I always carry when hiking
Like behind Walmart in Plymouth. Having a hobo walk up on you all drugged / drunk at dusk after a hunt is the making of a bad situation. Thankfully this winter drove most of them out. I didn't see any during sled season unless they were under the 4' of snow and we were riding over them.

I always make my girlfriend carry when she takes our dogs for walks. Also, the idea that a lot of people have that an untrained dog will protect you is a ****ing illusion not even remotely worth hedging your life upon.

like sailors headed on shore leave without protection? [rofl]

Seriously though, a lot people hike without even a ****ing knife. Extra large rape whistle, there is a market for it.

I Always carry, and not in a back pack, always found that silly when people say they carry in their pack. I am more concerned about the 2 legged animals than anything that lives naturally out there. I'm also not very friendly on the trail, I will say hello and all that stuff, but don't ask to hike with me and don't get closer than my walking stick extends! I will normally stop if I see or hear someone approaching and let them pass either way, I'm in no rush. I hike alone more often than not.
