I’m planning on building or buying myself a new AR over the next year and was hoping for some recommendations. Complete guns work too, not just parts. For example I like the Sig 516 Precision Marksman but am unsure of its current status or future.

Requirements:

Single top rail all the way out.

Needs to be accurate out to 600 meters.

Preferably piston rather than direct. I prefer less cleaning.

Floating barrel.

Able to attach accessories if needed (primarily a bipod).

I would probably not put a fore grip on; at the most it would be the Magpul angled one.

Durable, really durable, it will get beat.

Ambidextrous safety and while primarily righty needs to be able to be shot lefty.

Magpul PRS stock

A nice crisp trigger.

Muzzel brake is a nice to have if possible.

Sights:

Will put Dueck Defense iron sights on it.

Will also put a long range optic like the Nikon M-223 with BDC 600 reticle so suggestions for optics are also needed.

I want it to be as durable as possible and am not fond of batteries so without those if possible.

The bad part:

And finally, it needs to be MA compliant…..

So what are your opinions and/or recommendations? What barrel lengths, etc.

I’m ok with it not being a shorter gun, I have an M&P 15 Sport and plan on hopefully getting a FS2000 before too long.

I would go with a 18" rifle length barrel. Either a JP or Firebird SS barrel, both are very accurate and have been turned down under the handguard enough that they transition well.

I would not go with a Piston, not as accurate as DI, too many proprietary parts, bolt tilt, bolt float, heat in small parts issues.

Handguard, JP makes a nice one, as does Firebird, but there are many out there, they all can have a top rail. pick the one that you like the looks of best.
If you need a monorail. then your options are more limited.

Brake. SJC Titan, loud, but it is the most effective brake made

i'm about to grab one of these...actually going tonight to pay the down payment and have my supplier order one. sounds like you probably are wanting to build one cuz it's gonna be tough to find one complete which will accomodate everything you are wanting. but this is pretty close. you would have to put in an ambidexterous safety. but great reviews on this gun, no ammo issues, smooth operation...u can see all the features for your self. WARNING>>>>S&W have 2 versions of this M&P15FT...one has troy folding sights and a few chromed pieces of hardware which sells for around $1500, the other has magpul folding sights and only a chromed bolt which sells for about $1100. i spent about a half an hour talking with my local gun dealer and that's the only differences we can find between the two. most shops quoted me $1500-$1600 for the more expensive one but there is a less expensive model available...they have different SKU#'s as well.

Sounds like you want to build an SDM rifle.

Compliance isn't an issue with the parts you've specified. Looks like you just need to pick a rail. I think the Daniel Defense one is the best out there. I wouldn't bother with a piston system personally, but whatever. For a trigger it's Geissele or nothing for me.

I am with Supermoto, ditch the piston.

A good 18" barrel and rifle length gas system is the way to go. Mine, is my favorite in the safe. It has a 15 inch JP float tube on it which I like a lot.

The PRS is heavy, so if you wanted to put a heavier break on the end of the barrel, it would balance out. I happen to like the ACE skeleton and the plain old A2 stocks on rifles myself.

I was thinking about the old style stock as I always had a good cheek weld with my M-16.

The PRS is a nice stock, but if you built it with an A2 stock and left the brake off it would be legal for NRA service rifle matches. (Quad rails are now allowed.) Competition really helps improve skills.

Probably down the road. I want a gun I can use for just about anything and am partial to iron sights and quick access to them.

In case you are wondering I've been in the more compact the better thought process for a while so this is a bit of a change.

Two of you said 18". Any reason for that over a 20"?

18" is the shortest that will run a rifle length gas system. Which is the smoothest and softest gas length. And it will still get you the velocity needed for 600

I find the normal 18" SPR type barrel to heavy (had mine turned down). So 20" would more than likely be even heavier. I'm running a 16" midlength nordic/lilja barrel now and really like the way it shoots, but it is not as soft as my 18" I have always been impressed with the way the Firebird 18" and JP 18" handled and they are both extremely accurate. I believe the Firebird is a Lothar Walthar barrel.

Same reasons he said. I started with a 16" midlength, but wanted the rifle length gas tube, so I started ordering parts for a new upper assembled around an 18" White Oak "SPR" barrel.

I also have a pinned 14.5" carbine if for what ever reason I don't want to lug the rifle around.

I built my AR around that barrel and I like it a lot. I realize it's quite a drive but if you want to come to HSC, you're welcome to try it. I should also note that I too wanted a rifle length gas system.

To the OP, I built this AR and I find it to be a very good combination of long range accuracy, reasonable weight (for what it is) and balance.

Parts list includes:
18" WOA SPR barrel
Battlecomp muzzle brake
VLTOR VIS rifle length upper
DPMS lower
Gisselle trigger
Young MFG BCG
ACE skeleton stock

I'd also recommend punting the piston system especially if you can do a rifle length DI gas system. It shoots very well. Also, the chromed bolt is easy to clean.

I do like the way that Battlecomp looks on that rifle. I actually baught one to go on this gun, but learned the secret handshake and got the "custom comp" [wink] instead. meth0d actually bought the Battlecomp from me and put it on a 18" WOA rifle length as well.

Here is mine, WOA barrel, JP adjustable gas system, JP 15" free float, custom comp, lightened BCG and an ACE that I wrapped with paracord. Very soft shooter.

Great looking rifle. I need to learn how to do the paracord wrap.

Thanks for all the advice. I will.take a look.and probably have more questions in a few days.
