So I sat down to clean my "new" AR and took some gun cleaner to a rag. Wiped it across the outside of the upper receiver and after about 5 minutes, noticed that a white cloudiness now appeared wherever I put cleaner on. CRAP! What to do?

Its a Stag Arms lower with a M4 profile RRA flattop. I'll take some pictures when I get home and give you the exact name of the cleaning solution. I bought the solution from the Powderhorn in Hyannis. White bottle with red label.......cant think of the name [sad2]

Do you remember if it was something benign like CLP, or are we talking Gun Scrubber or something like that here? I've noticed the latter tends to make black metal less black ("cloudy" sounds like a good adjective), so I avoid it unless I'm cleaning off cosmo.

It is probably a solvent that has stripped out all of the oils on the metal. Normal stuff. What you do next is let it dry and then wipe it down with a silicon cloth or some other oily substance and put it in the safe. It will be nice and purdy in short time.

Alright, so pictures are a no go since I cant find where my bloody camera is. However, I have the information of the solvent I was using (thanks Terraformer, seems like you're right). It is Outers "Nitro Solvent Gun Cleaner". Terraformer, would just regular gun oil work on it? Use a rag to apply it? Thanks for all your help, gentlemen

You're welcome. Yes, regular gun oil will work. Just go lightly and reapply as needed.

I remember the first time I cleaned my Colt National Match, I used the then "new" GunScrubber...I thought I had ruined my receiver. I hosed it down with BreakFree, let it sit and wiped it down with a rag. Worked like a charm...Never used GunScrubber again...

Keep in mind that hoppes is the solvent and oil combined. It is not a bad thing to use solvent so long as you use the oil too.
