I am getting a White Oak Service rifle upper.
A matter of opinion question.
For Service rifle competition, which sights (Size) do you recommend and why?
The choices are:· · Choice of .052", .062", or .072" NM front sight post

Next question, given a choice; pre ban with the birdcage or post ban with out?

For the front sight post, I chose .052" on mine. That seems to be the most even with the "black" of the target.

For the muzzle, I personally would choose a postban option. This is because I am in MA and I would want to build that preban lower into a carbine. The postban upper will also be slightly cheaper.

If I was in a free state, I would get the flash suppressor. That is the way the rifle was designed and I would like to keep the service rifle as authentic as possible.

Also, I have a WOA service rifle upper. You won't be disappointed!

There are some state you can not travel to for matches if you have a post ban with the nasty features.

I believe you mean a pre-ban. They are the ones with those evil bayonet lugs, collapsible stocks, flash suppressors etc. that wreck havoc upon the innocent. LOL

In free states you can get a post-ban rifle with all the evil features. It's just like a pre-ban but manufactured after the 94 Federal Ban, but it's still a post-ban rifle.

True, but White Oak Armament refers to the FS model as "pre-ban" and the non FS model as "post-ban". The damn AWB laws confuse us all in so many ways!

Before I bought my White Oak service upper, I spoke with John Holliger about the sight options. He'd suggested that the smaller the better, so I went with the .052. I've had no trouble making out the post against the target, and the width seems about right. I'm glad I didn't go larger. I also ordered the posted rear sight (1/4 moa). I'm very happy with the upper, and feel that I've gotten my money's worth.

As for the pre-ban vs. post-ban... I'd prefer to have a flash cage for low light shooting (which isn't likely for me) and crown protection, but in the end it really doesn't make much difference to me.

Another vote for .052 here, although that's quite easy to change after the fact if you realize you want wider.

I'm for ditching the birdcage. One fewer thing to potentially get out of whack, and it's easier to clean that way.
