I have a Bushmaster "Shorty" which is the A2 version of it. I'd really like to get a flat top upper on my AR but I'm not sure if M4 uppers or other flat tops are interchangeable. I figure I'd be better off buying a stripped upper for a couple of hundred bucks instead of paying $800 + for a complete upper. Thanks for your help.

Of course they are. Why would you need to pay $800 for a complete upper though? A complete flat-top upper can be had for $350-400.

In short ... yes. AR's are like lego's and as long as the parts are milspec you're good to go.

Only thing to note is that Colt used to use big front pins in their early lowers and you'll need an adaptor to fit a normal milspec upper to a big pin Colt lower or a big-pin Colt upper to a milspec lower.

You know how long i've been searching for a big pin A3 upper!!

You rock!

I was just poking around and I found that today. Seems like an interesting alternative to using an offset pin thingy....

Model 1 has M-4 style ban-compliant uppers (no bolt) for $380. I have a Model 1 kit gun that I've shot for the last two years without cleaning, with no issues and a few thousand rounds down the pipe.

Are there any disadvantages to using the offset pin?

In operation no but it's just a pain since it requires 2 screwdrivers to remove and the screw-on pin head can loosen up while firing. Loctite fixes that but then you need to put loctite on every time you remove the offset pin.
