Are there currently any .22LR/.410 combo guns on the market?

A buddy of mine and I used to shoot an M6 while out in the field for small game and assorted plinking. I'm looking for something to take backpacking as a trail rifle, and the .22LR/.410 combo seems ideal. However, a bunch of web searches reveal that there aren't any domestic production combo rifles around. Remington was reselling the Turkish MP94 up till 2008, but that looks like it. Am I missing something, and/or does anyone have advice on tracking down a good trail combo rifle? Cheers.

Never mind. I must have been wrong about the brand (not listed online). I'll look next time I'm there.

Aloha

Not trying to derail or anything, but if someone finds one, can you post a link? .22x2 = .44(from a strictly mathematical perspective) so I don't understand how one could chamber a rifle to fire .410 and a round that is almost half it's diameter without swapping bolt and barrel.

Two barrels. Double barrelled setup. They also make three-barreled specimens called "drillings". Go a googling - nifty little genus of firearms.

Baikial (sp?) makes them if im not mistaken, last time i was in A&J in housatonic they had them as well as larger chamberings as well. a couple were 12ga and 308, as well as 30-06 offerings...

I haven't dealt with Buds nor looked at prices elsewhere but figured it would help with comparisons if you were still looking.

I have purchased from Bud's before. Absolutely zero problems ordering from them and they ship quickly. If I recall correctly the gun was at my FFL within a week.

Yea I know thread revival blah blah, but I'm interested in the Savage 42, the 22lr/410 combo rifle. Damn this would fill the niche I need for NH perfectly. Please PM me with any leads! thanks!

Thread revival, again!

Interested in experiences regarding break action, combination guns similar to the Savage model 24. The idea of a utility type gun interests me, especially a .22lr over 20ga or .410. I honestly don't have a need for one, don't know what I would do with it and don't have money to throw around for one.

The research I have done keeps bringing me to the Savage model 24 but all I have found for sale were beat and priced over $600. Jim's Gun Shop in Winslow ME has a bunch that i cant afford.

I am not a fan of the plastic looks of the Savage model 42. This comes in 22lr or 22mag/.410 and some reviews state they shoot slug and .45 long colt although the barrel isn't marked for it. Any experience?

Springfield Armory M6 Scouts are fetching a premium and are rare.

EAA IZH94/USSG MP94/Baikal doesn't have much info out there on the web and not in stock anywhere.

H&R Handi-Rifle combos come in many chamberings but each chambering is a different barrel.

Rossi Matched Pair and Trifecta also have many chamberings but each chambering is a different barrel too.

So my choices look like the Savage Model 42 or the EAA USSG. Any experience is appreciated.

I own a Springfield M6, bought it to replace an O/U my father has had since he was a kid. Trigger is ok, gun functions fine but is heavier than I thought it would be. Be a good truck gun etc, but not sure I would want to carry it.

Are you only interested in a new gun?
The Savage 24 is a good rifle/shotgun, I've got one in .22/.410. They also made them in some more practical calibers/guages, too. I've seen them with the rifle as a .22, .22mag, .223 and 30-30 withe the shotgun .410, 20 and 12.
I remember them being common and relatively cheap - but a quick run through gunbroker shows that this well has dried up too.
They should be C&R eligible if you cruise the auction sites.

No, used is fine. I actually would rather the model 24 over anything else, especially in 22lr/20ga, but cannot mentally afford a beat up one at $600 and good condition at $800-900. I will probably keep an eye out for another year and if I cant find an affordable model 24, I will settle for something else.

I grew up with a Stevens. It was hell on squirrels. The new Savage 42 looks real nice. Mine is .22/.410 with ryanite stock. I know the 20 ga would be more versatile but it ruins the proportions of the gun.

Edit: the plastic look of the new Savage is OK by me as the gun I grew up with had a plastic stock. [smile]

Mine has the side selector. I have read that it is prone to breakage. I have never had a problem with it. It was always a surprise when carefully lining up a shot with the .22 and the .410 went off... Something about those three inch .410 (mine had a 3" chamber assume they all do) that seems super cool to a 15 year old. Here is a pic of one with the rynite (one of us can't spell) stock that went for $312 in 2008.

Stock is hollow and had a large screw in plug in the butt plate. That plastic has such nice figure like fine walnut. [grin] Of course, mine has a broken stock that I repaired with epoxy. As much as I have liked it, if it cost $350 today and the Savage can be had for $399, it is a no brainer on the side of the Savage 42... I haven't shot mine in over 34 years. Might be time to drag it out of the safe. Too bad I can't shoot in the backyard anymore (or use a .22 for squirrels around here). [sad2]

Good luck. I hope you find one that makes you happy.

I am a fan of the old Savage & now Stevens, since you pointed it out, rather than the newer model 42. Looks like it is hard to find a replacement tenite stock but new old stock, used and new unfished wood stocks are available:

Keep me in mind if you ever want to get rid of it. Unless I find one of the older, I probably will be getting the model 42. Thanks
