Shipping in the EU is, in some cases, more than the gun itself! Is it always that much, or am I reading it wrong?

Depends. Legally guns can only be shipped by certain services which is quite a big chunk.
Certified transportation is usually quoted in between € 30 -€ 40 ($40 - $55).
In the example I had linked, shipping is € 20 ~ $27. Oh, the gun is now up at € 3.50
