Hi All -

I have a brand new Beretta 92FS that shot Winchester White Box 9mm Luger perfectly with no problems at all. Today, I shot 50 rounds of Remington UMC 9mm Luger (Green/White) box and had a couple "stove pipes", and more than a few "feed jams".

Can ammo really change from manufacturer to manufacturer that dramatically, or does my firearm need to be broken in? I have 10 boxes of the Remington so I'm hoping not to have any more problems with them.

From my experience, I would not use any UMC in the Beretta 92. I tried the yellow value box (250 rounds)and it sucked.
Seriously, 1 out of 5 would stove pipe or jam.
All other ammo has run through w/out a problem.

Bought the same gun from there a month ago. Be careful with big yellow boxes of UMC ammo - had tons of problems with it. Any other ammo, it eats just fine!
Enjoy!

Oh crap! I read your post and didn't take your advise! Although it wasn't a yellow box I should have recognized the "UMC"!

I'm bummed.....[sad2]

Ammo is a pain to get around here... wish I could return it but I'd nothing else to buy!

never had a single failure with UMC in my 92FS. how many rounds have you put through your gun?

have you cleaned it? properly lubricated it?

the rounds may just be a bad batch and a little weaker than normal, too.

I have maybe 200 rounds through it. I took it apart today but did not clean it. Already time for a cleaning? It still has a nice lube/oil job on her from the factory.

I will also add that the slide didn't lock after each last shot. Maybe got a bad batch with not enough ummfff?

I used the UMC in the 92 after I bought and cleaned the gun.
Tried everything - different shooters still had the same problem with the UMC ammo. Tried swapping parts of the gun with another 92. The UMC just didn't work well at all. Tried Federal and Champion - no problem at all. Went back to UMC - problem.

Once I learned to stay away from the UMC it's worked fine.

I couldn't tell you how strong a grip I have. I seem to have full control over the firearm. I'll make note of this today when I go to the range. I'll let you know how I make out.

I'm not a big fan of blaming the ammo (for this scenario), I know some stuff don't shoot right in some guns. But me personally I would give it some extra elbow grease and some extra lube and see if that helps. I'm also not sure about the limp wrist thing, I'll admit -- most of my experience with that type of gun is with military ball ammo, but even shooting that crap, and seeing shooters with a limp wrist - it wasn't often the cause for stove pipes/jams in my experience, but a dirty or not properly lubed gun would. Good luck.

I shoot Remmington UMC(white box) through my 92FS all the time and I have never had a FTE or FTF and the gun pretty much eats everything.

I also bought the firearm used so it was well broken in already :)

I'm a member at Rochester as well. Maybe we could meet up at your convenience and we'll swap ammo and see what happens. I'd like to see if my ammo (which was bought all at the same time) is bad or something. If it all works flawlessly in your firearm maybe mine just needs to wear in.

A 92FS jamming? What are you doing, running it dry? [laugh] (The rails should be glistening on that thing with lube)

That being said, UMC is notoriously weak in 9mm, at least in terms of
providing recoil for the gun to work right.

I'd try some Blazer AL or Blazer brass... or even good old WWB 9mm.

I went to the range this afternoon and shot another 100rds. I had all kinds of FTF and stove pipes. Also had two Failure to Extract. I will also say that the ejection of the brass acts completely different than when I use Winchester. Almost all FTF ejected vertically grazing my hands. A couple popped back and hit me in the neck and glasses! I appreciate my eye protection fully!

I also tried a firm grip focusing more on the grip than the actual target and still had the same problem.

I almost made it through a full magazine but the second to last shot jammed.

Thanks for the tip and recommendations. I'm gonna grease her up tonight for tomorrow!

UMC 9mm is weak ammo, but not weak enough to cause a sh*t storm in a 92FS... I've put a few thousand rounds through my 92' (including 50 last night) without a problem.

Try cleaning the gun, polish the ramp, lube the rails thoroughly, and give it another whirl.

Buy a couple boxes of 2-3 different types of ammo (WWB, Blazer, maybe a box of JHPs) and see how it performs with each box. Take notes.

Also be mindful of which mags you use - sometimes they're the source of the problem that you're least likely to suspect.

clean it good

firwt thing i do on a new gun is field strip and clean, then lube. could be
some preservative from the factory screwing things up... can't hurt to
clean it good and eliminate that from the list.

WOW - Called Wal-Mart in Fairhaven and they had 1 box of WWB 9mm. I went down and bought it. I have compared the the two bullets (Winchester/Remington) and there is quite a difference.

The Winchester has a brass primer and the Rem has a steel. The Winchester bullet is longer and pointier than the Rem by an 1/8"(eyeballing). The brass casings are the same size, but the extractor groove on the Winchester is smaller and has less slope.

Going to the range later, let you know how I make out.

I'd love too, I shoot trap on Sundays so if you want to meet up around noon it would be perfect! Or if you want to meet up earlier than that I always need a good excuse to go to the range :P. I'll bring some Winchester and UMC (whitebox), some Miltec1 lube and my 92FS magazines.

We noticed that with the UMC VP, where the case met the bullet, the case was sort of sharp. In that when you ran your finger down the bullet, it would almost stop short where the case started. Didn't notice that with other ammo.
