Beretta M9-A1 .22. Can this shoot 9?

I've heard that if you buy a Beretta M9 in 9 MM, you can buy a slide, barrel and magazine that will allow you to shoot .22 out of the gun.
Can you do it the opposite way? Buy a M9-A1 - .22, and get a 9 mm slide, barrel and magazine, and shoot 9?
