I'm looking into getting a black powder rifle after my college graduation, and I'm on the fence on what type to get. I've shot a modern black powder, with the 209 primers and pyrodex. I think I'm leaning more toward getting a traditional percussion (cap) rifle. Thumbing through the Shooter's Bible I came across the Lyman Deerstalker and I'm liking the looks of that rifle. Does anyone have experience with the traditional style black powder rifles? Lets get some advice/opinions.

Thanks.

I dont know that much about the Lymans so I can not comment on them. As a great Starter a T/C Hawken is a great BP rifle. They are accurate and easy to get parts and supplies for.

I have a .53 caliber hawken that is an accurate reproduction of a J&S hawken rifle. The drawbacks as a hunting rifle are that it's long and heavy and is rifled for a round ball. As someone already mentioned, the Thompson Center Hawken would be a good choice. It's rifled to shoot both round balls and bullets. It's easy to load, accurate and a pretty good reproduction of a hawken. My son uses one in .50 caliber for deer hunting and hasn't needed a second shot yet. It's a great blend of traditional looks and modern technology.
