Looking for a rifle in .308 for hunting and fun. I was considering bolt action and narrowed down to the remington 700 vtr and a howa 1500, but then I noticed the AR10. The AR10 seems a bit pricier but I am looking for a long term purchase so that is not as much a factor.

Any advice? Accuracy, versitility?

Thanks

You won't want to drag an AR10 around the woods while hunting; it is heavy. Get a bolt gun for hunting.

I have a Rem 700 ADL I bought for $350 that shoots 1 MOA with factory 150Gr RNSP ammo.

I don't think an AR-10 can do that without costing a lot more.

So, sounds like a bolt gun. Do you guys know much about the Howa stuff? or should I just stick with the remington? The rems are priced pretty well with the rebate right now.

Actually, I had a DPMS LR308 that shot extremely well with Fed GMM (1/2MOA). I never tried it with hunting ammo, so I can't say what it did with round nosed soft points. I would have put that rifle up against any bolt gun for accuracy. Of course, it cost a heck of a lot more than your $350 Rem 700, but the DPMS rifles are the lowest priced AR's in 308.

This. My RRA LAR-8 (RRA's version of the AR-10) will shoot 1 MOA or better if I do my thing. Problem is that it's MUCH heavier then my Savage 10FP. For hunting and saving money for a great rifle, I'd go with the 10FP. The accutrigger is great, the rifle is very accurate and you'll save a bunch of money to spend on quality glass.

My AR-10 is plenty accurate. But the muzzle brake is deafening, the rifle was expensive, and it isn't a lightweight.

Is it true that the Remington R25 is a DPMS .308?

It's based on the DPMS platform but I believe it is manufactured by Bushmaster.

All three companies are owned by Cerebrus, along with:
* Remington Arms
* Bushmaster Firearms International
* DPMS Panther Arms
* Marlin
* H & R Firearms
* NEF
* Dakota Arms
* LC Smith
* Parker
* AAC
* Barnes Bullets
* EOTAC
* INTC

My first Howa 1500 was a stainless 30-06 with a 22" sporter barrel. It was extremely accurate once I threw away the flimsy plastic stock it came with and had it bedded in a Bell & Carlson Medalist stock.

I now have a 24" heavy barrel 1500 in 308 and this is what it can do with my poor bipod technique at 100 yds:
