I'm looking for a few books on edible and medicinal plants in New England. No, I don't have any dilusions of subsiting from nature's pantry here on the north shore, but I'm sure there's enough out there to supliment my stores, if I just knew what to look for.

Some great books here, remember trees are just as valuable as plants but easier to spot and ID especially in winter.

When looking at various books - make sure they cover only the area you are interested in.

Many books will try to cover everywhere - and therefore do a poor job of covering anywhere.

For example - a book might be described as "Eastern US" - and include everything from Canadian tundra to swamps of Florida. Lots of info you'll likely never use.

Worse are the ones that include world-wide plants (some military 'survival' publications come to mind).

The Peterson Field Guides are good, one in my library is the Eastern/Central Medicinal Plants and Herbs by Steven Foster and James Duke. I like that you can take any plant you come across and it walks you through the identifying process. For Eastern MA specifically check out Boston School of Herbal Studies. They do local plant/herb identification walks (as well as offer lots of great classes).
