Anyone using an automotive scope for their barrels ? I wouldnt expect any firearms shop to carry a bore scope and was thinking maybe an automotive scope would be good enough.

As long as the scope OD fits down the barrel it should be ok. The scopes I got are all good for .22 call and up. They also have the mirror attachments so you can look into gas ports and such.

let me clarify. I was thinking of bore cameras but a bore scope would do the same thing, just no video recording . I've got a barrel with some rounds on it and want to inspect it for a carbon ring.

Do auto shops sell these things ?

No clue. Look on the web site for the shop/store.
BTW, there are decent scopes out there (camera type) for pretty short money these days.
Like this one. Amazon.com
Or this one. Amazon.com
So either about $56 or just under $100.

I know you said no Amazon but

I bought 2, one for the garage in FL one for the shop in NH

These are pics of a model 60 barrel I took with my phone, so it is a picture of a screen, frankly the screen is a lot clearer than the picture shows

Lots of reasons. One of which is that I'm old and dont embrace change very well. I prefer to visit a local store and pay with a paper check. Hence, the automotive stores ( auto zone, reillys , napa , etc... ) .

I will get one eventually.

I get it. I also like to put my hands on something before I buy it, but it's getting harder and harder to do that.

I just used the cheaper of the two I linked to take a picture down the barrel of one of my pistols. Connected via USB to my computer, which was easy. Use the 'Camera' app to take either video or picture. Came with a couple of the mirror ends for use (took it off for this).

IF you get something from an auto parts store, you'd need to be damned sure the OD of the thing was small enough to go down the barrel of anything you could ever use it on.

BTW, I'd be willing to sell you this one for less than I paid if you're interested. IF you wanted to use it on a phone, you'll need to get an adapter (USB A to whatever), unless your device uses the microUSB port. I know I've had USB A to USB C adapters before, but hell if I can find any of them right now.

Make sure you clean the scope well if you use it for both purposes. You don’t want engine gunk and chemicals in a barrel any more than you’d want barrel gunk and powder residue in an engine.
