I went to the gun show today and decided to pick up a M&P 15 (5.56mm) after thinking for a while about a rifle. Initially I was going to go with a Henry rifle, but the S&W had a better smile factor. This is just going to be a range toy for me. One thing I like about the AR15 is that the customization options are endless. The only thing I wonder about with making any changes is running afoul of the AWB. The MA AWB seems to only cover very specific design features only. Would adding a bi-pod be legal for example? I would also want to invest in a nice scope at some point because this will be a target shooter. Anyways, time to get out shooting. I just hope some nice weather is coming :)

Fun gun and loud. The experts will weigh in shortly.
From the GOAL website :

The definition of “assault weapon” is the same as the federal law that went into effect on September 13, 1994. Specific guns are banned by name, and guns with certain combinations of features are banned:

a semiautomatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least 2 of--

(i) a folding or telescoping stock;
(ii) a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon ;
(iii) a bayonet mount;
(iv) a flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor; and
(v) a grenade launcher;

The key phrase being "AT LEAST 2 OF" .

Congrats on the purchase.
I have the S&W Sport AR-15, cheapo no-name bipod and a Redfield variable magnification scope.
I like the Redfields a lot, I have one on my MP-15/22 as well.
Like everyone says, mods are endless. Lego's for adults!

The mp15 is a greater intro / builder rifle for relatively short money. It will serve you well and get you into the ar game. Think Legos for adults.

Have fun!

there are a bunch of options for bipods, scopes and scope mounts...i just ordered up a cheap utg bipod on amazon for $30 cause i figure it's better than using the blocks and sandbags at the range...i didn't see a point in sinking too much money into that item...as for scopes i posted up a thread on here and asked and everyone chimed in with good suggestions/information...it really all depends on your budget, how good your eyes are, how much magnification you want, what features you want, balancing how much you want to spend vs how often you plan to shoot, etc...def do some research before buying a scope...i just ordered vortex viper pst 2.5-10x44 scope and an adm ad-recon-30 mount...can't comment on either as i don't have them yet but from what i've read larue, adm and bobro are the way to go if you want a solid quick release mount...the scope thread i started is below...good luck

So which M&P15 did you get, the Sport, the Tactical or what? I'm just curious, my first AR was an M&P15T. Did you get the compliant version, meaning with no muzzle device, or did you get a free state version that's been Massified, meaning made Mass compliant by pinning the stock, pinning and welding the muzzle brake and grinding the bayonet lug off?

Provided that it already has a fixed stock/pinned adjustable stock, a pinned and welded muzzle brake (or no muzzle device) and no bayonet lug, then the only thing you have to be careful of is making sure than any mag over 10 rounds that you buy is pre-ban. These you can get in stores, the classified ads or gun shows.

Please tell me this wasn't a serious question. You're just trolling, right? If not, I weep for our future.

What better way to welcome a new member than to shame them for not knowing everything about gun laws rather than providing them with references to better educate themselves.

Coulda been a troll.

I note you chose to bash me rather than assist her either.

Regardless -- Vettegirl - No, a bipod doesn't make an ar into an aw.
GOAL has a good page for what does:

Congrats, know serveral people with the sport great gun for the money and fun range gun.

Do your self a huge favor, don't waste money on a bipod.
Placing a bipod on your hand guard or barrel will affect accuracy. As for scopes endless....don't cheap out on mounts.
I like the concept of the sport for a affordable rifle. Be carefully of the money you can end up spending on it. You can quickly spend more on it than some better rifles cost out there and can quickly spend over what you can build a really nice AR for.
Ex: my friend bought a sport 625$ then passed through 3 bargain optic and 2 mounts for another 300, and wonders,why the scopes don't hold zero?
Then needed fancy grip and cheap drop in rail for another 80$ then spent another 75$ on customised dust cover and charge handle. Then bought another buis for 65$. NOW he's talking 2 stage trigger for another 120$ and a National Match detach carry handle....yikes he's at 1300$ for a base MP sport.
Keep the sport what it is and buy ammo or another sport....wear out the barrel and then up grade...just a thought.
I think the mph sport is a good gun to really learn basic MARKSMENSHIP with good iron sight use.

This gun is awesome. I laugh when its called an intro AR. Like you have to pay thousands for it not to be a real AR. You can do many modifications to this gun and unless you plan on crawling around the deserts of Kandahar you dont need a dust cover and as far as a forward assist it has that scalloped section instead which probably works. I have no idea since mine has NEVER jammed and all I shoot is Tula steel ammo. I will say I hope you got one with the muzzle break. It looks a million times better. Good luck and good purchase.

That'll run just fine whether you want to leave it as is, or upgrade it. You can always put on Magpul MOE handguards, pistol grip and buttstock to dress it up. To change that buttstock, you may have to change the buffer tube as well. My M&PT has a compliant buffer tube with no adjustment holes in it. Yours might be the same. If you want the barrel threaded, which you may get the itch for after a while, some places will charge $100 for the threading and another $40 to Massify the muzzle brake.

No matter what you do with it, have fun [grin]

Just ship it to Adco. Good work for cheaper.

(not an M&P)

Funny that you are denigrating a new member with a serious question:/ I had a lgs tell me that a grip-pod was illegal in MA as it was a pistol grip. There are no dumb questions for newbies regarding MA laws when you consider that lgs and police don't even know the laws.

Got my wife the M&P15 Sport for Christmas. But we're in NC so no BS about stock/mags/flash suppressor.
Nice price for entry.
She got me the M&P15-22 MOE.
Bushnell TRS25 red dots on both.
Love it for indoor range. Waiting for a nice, less hectic weekend to go to an outdoor range with both. :)
