IMG_8811.jpeg IMG_8812.jpeg IMG_8813.jpeg BRN-180 gen2 x39 upper recoil buffer guide rod flies off into another dimension when you disconnect upper recieve from lower. I really wish I could post the video as it is comical.
In the Brownell videos it states that this has a snug fit so you might have to pull back on the charging handle to remove. But nope if you have a sad fixed mag lower and want to split to load, your recoil buffer the guide rod will fly out. There is no pin or detent holding it in. Posting to prevent someone else from making a poor purchase

You're saying the spring tension makes the guide assembly fly out of BRN180 uppers mated to fixed-mag x39 lowers?

I'm sure that's a TINY subset of owners, but it's always best to assume springs will do springy stuff the first few times you encounter them. To ask a stupid question, are you sure your bolt carrier was in the forward position before you popped the rear pin?

The actual AR180 has a different takedown catch, and holding onto the guide assembly is built in.

The guide assembly behaved the same way with a preban lower. When I pulled it out of the box there was a red zip tie holding it all together. I cut the zip tie and set it down on the bench as I would set any lower down. When it touched the bench the guide assembly ejected on its own. Bolt carried fully seated and never cycled. I expect to get roasted and maybe learn something. Other than the guide assembly and slugging out at .309 it functions well

The video on their website shows some type of retainers on the spring rods. The springs don't hang off like yours.

Rite!!! What I expected and what I got is something else. I feel like I need to improve what I bought if I’m going to keep it. They could have easily put a ball detent at the tail of the upper to keep the guide in place if you need to open up.

Wait, now I'm confused. Are you upset because the springs aren't captive, or because the assembly went flying? Or both?

Email back from Brownell’s was a return link and contact information for primary weapon systems to ask them if they have a fix. But it was “somewhat normal” for the guide rod assembly to have little to no retention of any kind.

Pws says some people use tape or a zip tie….

I was going to go with a pws upper but they are out of stock on everything but 223 wylde. They said they are re designing the uppers and more than likely won’t be available until January.
I like the Brn design apposed to a piston conversion for a few reasons. Only reason I don’t like it is because of the guide rod assembly retention. The tight bore is something I can work with and will probably get with any ar x39 barrel. This is all just conversation for the archive as I didn’t find much on NES when I used the search bar for BRN-180

Why the f*** would anyone use a fixed mag lower? 🤣

That stupid lower is the proving ground. If it works and functions on that sad piece of Massachusetts socialist commie junk then it will work on the rest%

Well, I get that, but if you have to tune the upper to work with that lower, then it might not work with other lowers no mo'. Just something to be mindful of.

I'm not usually a fan of shoehorning gun parts to work with other parts they're not designed to work with.
