You might try Jute twine next time. Then you won't have to spend a lot of time breaking up burlap. Jute fibers are easily untwisted after it is tied. It also breaks more readily, so your less apt to get caught up in hedges, wire fence, etc.
I'm working on kind of a top cover garment that can go over a regular outfit, vest, etc. basically some laundry bag mesh (about 1/2" nylon weave) that the jute twine can be tied to like those artwork rug projects. The top will be like a jacket and the pant legs will be open seams like chaps, with large toggles (buttons) so I can get it on and off easier if I've already got a bunch of MOLLE gear on.
