Bye Bye Taurus Hand Canon

It has been noted elsewhere on this forum.

I really don't get the point. If you want a big, heavy bullet hitting the target, use an X-frame.

I still don't get how they call it an SBS as it doesn't have a stock. I would think it would fall in to the AOW category if anything. Not that it would help Taurus any as far as how they declared it when it was imported.

I agree, but a lot of shotguns don't have stocks......

You can't call it a Title 1 pistol because the caliber is over .50. It's not a Title 1 PGO shotgun either because the barrel is too short. I too am surprised that they didn't say AOW, but it doesn't really matter much.

According to the BATFE, if it was originally manufactured with a PG, it's not a shotgun...

Pistol Grips and Shotguns

Firearms with pistol grips attached:

The definition of a shotgun under the GCA, 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(5), is “a weapon designed or redesigned, made or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder and designed or redesigned and made or remade to use the energy of an explosives to fire through a smooth bore either a number of ball shot or single projectile for each single pull of the trigger.

Under the GCA, 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(29)(A), handgun means “a firearm which has a short stock and is designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand.” Federal law provides under 18 U.S.C. 922(b)(1), that if the firearm to be transferred is “other than a rifle or shotgun,” the purchaser must be 21 years of age or older.

Certain commercially produced firearms do not fall within the definition of shotgun under the GCA even though they utilize a shotgun shell for ammunition. For example, firearms that come equipped with a pistol grip in place of the buttstock are not shotguns as defined by the GCA. A firearm with a pistol grip in lieu of the shoulder stock is not designed to be fired from the shoulder and, therefore, is not a shotgun. Since it is a firearm “other than a rifle or shotgun,” the purchaser must be 21 years of age or older.

Additionally, interstate controls apply. The licensee and transferee must be residents of the same State. Other questions raised pertain to entries made in the licensee’s required records with respect to firearm “type.” These entries should indicate the firearm type as “pistol grip firearm.”

Age Restriction & Interstate Transfer Reminders

Licensees are reminded that firearm frames, receivers, and other firearms that are neither handguns nor long guns (rifles or shotguns) are considered “Other Firearms.” They cannot be sold or delivered by a licensee to any person under 21 years of age. Additionally, 18 U.S.C. 922(b)(3) states that a licensee shall not sell or deliver any firearm other than a shotgun or rifle to any person who does not reside in the State in which the licensee’s place of business or activity is located; this restriction includes handguns, pistol grip firearms utilizing shotgun ammunition, and frames and receivers.

Does that mean it can be loaded in a vehicle? with a ccw?

No, it's still a shotgun under MA law...

M.G.L. c.140 s.121 said:
“Shotgun”, a weapon having a smooth bore with a barrel length equal to or greater than 18 inches with an overall length equal to or greater than 26 inches, and capable of discharging a shot or bullet for each pull of the trigger.

I just got an e-mail from the GunsAmerica blog about some of the new stuff at SHOT..... This was at the end.....

"PSS: The Taurus 28 gauge pistol drama continues. We have lit the article back up as it appears BATFE has now decided to allow them to make the revolver."

You mean I cant CCW a shotgun? [wink]

So on that subject, what classification is the judge that shoots shells, what was it a .410? Is it because this is set up to only hold shells or what?

The Judge fires .45LC and has a rifled barrel. It also happens to fire .410

28ga is .550 in diameter....which means it either has to be a shotgun of some sort, or a DD. To be importable, it has to be a shotgun in a "sporting purposes" configuration, which a revolver is not.
