I went out to buy some ammo so I'm ready when my SKS arrives next week. Stopped by Collectable Arms over in Merrimack, NH. Found my ammo, and also a nice Mini-14 that left with me.

WTF is wrong with me?!?! [wink] My wife is pissed![shocked] What's she gonna say when the SKS shows up too? Damn C&R license gets the f'n things shipped straight to my door where she finds them![frown]

Definitely gonna keep the SKS. I'm still undecided on the Mini. I've always liked the look & feel of them, but internet lore goes both ways on it. Guess I'll see how it goes when I get it to the range. If I love it I'll keep it. If not, I might look at turning it into a shotgun and a revolver.

most of them gets shipped UPS. Get myUPS account (sign up is free), that way, you can specify any delivery to be picked up at UPS center location. Once in the while their computer will **** up and they deliver to your door, that's when you say "oh, my scrap metal finally showed up!"

You jsut bought the Mini 14 and are already thinking about getting rid of it? WTF?

Heh, yeah I know. Just found myself going from zero to 2 rifles for the same purpose. Now that I've had it for a day and done a superficial clean & lube, I'm pretty sure I'll keep it...and the SKS. Plus it matches my 10/22 pretty well & my neighbor's kid is a smith over at Ruger so I can pelt him with beers if the rifle sucks.

The Mini-14... and the SKS when it arrives. A pictures of the wive's expression when the SKS shows up might also be worth some laughs?

She'll never know the difference. Wood stock with black metal. I'll never let her see more than one at a time. Just got to make sure to ambush the UPS guy.

The Mini-14 is not a bad rifle, just keep it clean, well oiled and it will work just fine.

Here it is, next to its little brother, 10/22:

Its a 181 series, 1979 production.

Or just tell her you got the mini-14 for "her"

sent from the Evo

The older Mini 14s were very reliable, but had some issues as far as accuracy. Newly made mini 14s are supposed to have fixed the accuracy issues. I am confident your mini will be very reliable and a fun gun to shoot.

I've been reading up on the mini's accuracy issues. Not really a concern for my usage. If its really bad, there are some things that can be done to mitigate the issues.

I just want it to be reliable & durable & able to drop an occasional watermelon at 100yds.

True. And that would be a big problem. Because he'd pull the trigger once, actually hit what he was aiming at, and be ruined forever to the world of guys who think firearms are just reloadable, interactive, fireworks that you stand around making loud noises with by pulling a little lever while pointing it in a safe direction. I was gonna say, see if you can call the SKS shipper and have it arrive at a time and place where she won't be.

Here's the email I sent to the CMP eight months ago when they had the bolt action release and I landed a M1917:
To whom it may concern,

I writing regarding the shipping of order #XXXXXX of a 1917 Service Grade, RM1917FG. The order was just entered into the e-store today with an order date of 10/29.

If at all possible, it would be greatly appreciated if my order (#XXXXXX) could be sent out on either a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Besides not being home on Tuesdays and over the weekend to receive the order, my wife IS home and will likely force me to sleep on the sofa for the forseeable future if she ends up seeing a long box from the CMP unloaded out of the back of a Fed Ex truck.

I can only imagine how busy you all must be given the bolt action rifle release and I know it’s certainly not your responsibility to protect me from my wife, but if there’s any way you can ship the order so as it isn’t likely to arrive on a Tuesday or over the weekend, I would be greatly indebted. Otherwise, in addition to a new rifle I may also have to buy a new sofa, but unfortunately the CMP doesn’t sell those.

Thanks,

[Obie]
Cust. #XXXXXX
I'm sure the people in Anniston got a good laugh, but more importantly they were able to accomidate me:
Your order is way down in the stack but, we are going to go ahead and ship it out this Tuesday (Nov. 1) and you should receive it sometimes on Wednesday. I hope this accommodates you and that you don’t have to sleep on the couch it sure is cold!!!!! Thanks for your support of CMP and have a nice day.

Just picked up the SKS at the UPS center (thanks for the tip)!

What I've got is a VG-EX condition 1951 Tula SKS refurb, matching serials, appears unfired. Still has some cosmo in some places. Cleaning kit is in the stock.

Here's some pics:

The date on the stock is 1950

I think I'm covered out to 200-300yds!:

Thats a nice mix of wood and iron. Myself and a few friends were hitting steel plates at 200 yards easy with one of my Russian SKSs a few weeks ago. If you look at the front sight block you will see a number stamped. 1, 2, or 3. That represents the accuracy grade on that rifle.

Thanks! I really like the look of the wood but I might throw the rugers in matching folding stocks.

Gonna leave the wood on the SKS. It has a 2 on the sight block. Hoping that's at least minute-of-monster.

Any idea of the relative meaning of the number?

Actually a little further reading I did on the FSB number neither confirms or dispels the rumor. I always thought thats what it meant but some are saying it might not be an accuracy grading system.

I'm gonna PM martin08 and see if he can chime in on this.

If you look on the barrel to the corresponding blocks (front sight block, gas block, front stock ferrule, rear sight block), you will also see the number that is stamped on the block, either a 1,2, or 3. These are fitment marks for the diameter of the seat, and the bore of the block. Number 1 seats are fitted with #1 blocks, 2 seats are fitted with 2 blocks, etc. Just an assembly aid, not an accuracy mark.

Pictured below is a number 1 on the barrel next to the front sight block/bayo lug. Followed by the fitment mark for the gas block.

I like the mini 14 platform very much. reliability has never been an issue for me and the accuracy is certainly more than adequate.
Since your's is a preban you are free to do whatever you wish to it as far as evil features go. I have one of these in as new condition for sale. I'll take $75 for it.

PS, I just noticed you are from NH (I assume manch= manchester) so pre-ban doesn't even enter in to it for you
