Carry Gun; Still looking

Makarov:

inexpensive
more power than a .380
good controls
nice size
accurate
did I mention inexpensive?

I'm LOVING my Sig p238 for carry. Also own a M+P40c that I carry along with it sometimes. With an Uncle Mike's .380 pocket holster I can CC at work (office setting) at home and everywhere in between. Do I feel safer with the 40? Oh sure. The p238 allows me to carry *everywhere* though, and the first rule of a gunfight is having a gun! Downside is they are expensive and HARD to find in MA. Still, well worth the price imo and a blast to shoot.

Hi Roman, I just spoke with Sig this morning asking when the 238 would be tested and become Ma. compliant. Scott told me they were working on it, but (as I'm sure we're all aware!) it's a long process and he wasn't sure when it would be available for sale here. After seeing the 6-pack in G & A this month, I'd have to buy (at least) 2. Which version did you buy and where if I may ask, and did they have more than 1 version and how much??
Thanks and good luck with the new piece. DTW

Hey DTW,

I have the Nitron with Rosewood Grips. You can get her specs here:

I bought it in a FTF from Glide here on NES. I will contact him and find out where he bought it from.

Thanks!

Any comments on this as a carry during the summer months?

+1. I shoot mine better than most other handguns I own. Great guns.

Makarov is narrower and shorter, and the barrel is longer, though it is heavier; which is OK due to the larger round and blowback operation, it will help with recoil.

Weight 730 g (26 oz)
Length 161.5 mm (6.34 in)
Barrel length 93.5 mm (3.83 in)
Width 29.4 mm (1.16 in)

The P238 isn't Mass. compliant, it's not even on the EOPS list, so there's not going to be some mystical dealer breaking the law to sell them to Mass. residents [laugh]. The gun's pretty new, but they will trickle into the state from time to time as people move to MA from free states with them, or as MA residents who are active duty soldiers stationed in free states buy them and bring them back in, inheritance, etc. If you're looking for something rare to Mass., watch the NES classifieds like a hawk; there's thousands of gun owners on here, so a pretty wide net is cast for available used guns. You should also pay attention to classifieds in your local paper or want ads (guns are usually listed in the sporting goods sections), but when you look, make sure you have cash in hand & move fast if you find something. It's a royal pain, but as long as it's not a Vektor CP1 or a Glock in .380 chances are pretty good that you'll stumble across a gun you're looking for, even if it's non-compliant.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the only ammo available for the Makarov old surplus stuff? I seem to recall that those guns have been out of production for awhile, which could also make parts/mags/holsters difficult to find.

Am I off base here?

carry something you can shoot, so ask around and try some before you jump in and buy one. put the carrying
pat aside for now you can figure that out later

I agree with JimB. As an instructor pointed out in a class recently, "don't turn this into an emotional decision." In that same class, I came to realize that the Glock serves as a better defensive pistol, and also has a higher capacity with less weight.

I love my little Beretta 950. It may be small but I can carry it without worrying about it.
