CLOSED.

Took up beekeeping and had some wax that I melted and made an Emergency Taper - an 8oz. candle of pure beeswax that will burn for 40-50 hours. Filtered the wax through two grease filters (paper cones) - so they're now infused with wax - they make for great fire starters.

I have an emergency taper and 2-fire starter / cones up for a karma. I'll mail the candle and 2-fire starters to you on my dime.

I'll pick a winner on Sunday, 2/23 randomly from all entries.*

*The Catch: I need quotes about Bees, Honey, Hives for the newsletter I work on. Things like "I'm going to float like a butterfly and sting like a bee" Muhammad Ali - so I'll include your entry if you have a quote.

That which is not good for the bee-hive cannot be good for the bees.

My Grandmother's litle ditty.

I eat my peas with honey.
I've done it all my life.
It makes my peas taste funny,
but it keeps them on my knife.

"Adam Flayman: Did you hear about Frankie?
Barry B. Benson: Yeah.
Adam Flayman: Are you going to his funeral?
Barry B. Benson: No, I'm not going to his funeral. Everyone knows you sting someone, you die. You don't waste it on a squirrel. He was such a hothead.
Adam Flayman: I guess he could have just gotten out of the way."
-from the bee movie
in please. thanks

"There are no limits in humanities ability to control the world in which we live. Take honey - it is made by bees vomiting plant sperm. Think about that. We developed the relationship with this animal to fly around gathering the semen of nearby plants, digest it, then spit it up for our tea and biscuits. And they get a wooden box for their efforts. Amazing" - Neuromorph

feel free to use that one. And I mean that quote sincerely I love honey and beekeepers.
In. Thanks

"A girl is like a blossom, with honey for just one man. A man is like a honey bee and gathers all he can. To fly from blossom to blossom a honey bee must be free. But blossom must not ever fly from bee to bee to bee." - the King in The King and I

It's good to be King!

“Bees do have a smell, you know, and if they don't they should, for their feet are dusted with spices from a million flowers.”
- Ray Bradbury, Dandelion Wine

This Karma was made for me lol

Another type is from a bee. Good luck
in finding such a woman! Only she
deserves to be exempt from stinging blame.
The household that she manages will thrive;
a loving wife beside her loving man,
she'll grow old, having borne illustrious
and handsome children; she herself shines bright
among all women. Grace envelops her.
She doesn't like to sit with other women
discussing sex. Zeus gratifies mankind
with these most excellent and thoughtful wives.

Women, by Semonides of Amorgos (Poem 7)

Thanks

Half a bee, philosophically
Must, ipso facto, half not be
But half the bee has got to be
A vis-a-vis its entity, d'you see?

But can a bee be said to be
Or not to be an entire bee
When half the bee is not a bee
Due to some ancient injury?

Singing

A laa dee dee, a one two three
Eric, the half a bee
A, B, C, D, E, F, G
Eric, the half a bee

Is this wretched demi-bee
Half asleep upon my knee
Some freak from a menagerie?
No! It's Eric, the half a bee

A fiddle de dum, a fiddle de dee
Eric, the half a bee
Hoh hoh hoh, tee hee hee
Eric, the half a bee

I love this hive, employee
Bisected accidentally
One summer afternoon, by me
I love him carnally

He loves him carnally
Semi-carnally
The end

Cyril Connelly?
No, semi-carnally
Oh, Cyril Connelly

The expression "Honeymoon" owes it's origin to mead. It refers to a tradition in which for the first month (moon) of marriage a bride was given mead to promote fertility!

“We’re so self-important. Everybody’s going to save something now. “Save the trees, save the bees, save the whales, save those snails.” And the greatest arrogance of all: save the planet. Save the planet, we don’t even know how to take care of ourselves yet. I’m tired of this shit. I’m tired of f-ing Earth Day. I’m tired of these self-righteous environmentalists, these white, bourgeois liberals who think the only thing wrong with this country is that there aren’t enough bicycle paths. People trying to make the world safe for Volvos. Besides, environmentalists don’t give a shit about the planet. Not in the abstract they don’t. You know what they’re interested in? A clean place to live. Their own habitat. They’re worried that some day in the future they might be personally inconvenienced. Narrow, unenlightened self-interest doesn’t impress me.

The planet has been through a lot worse than us. Been through earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, continental drift, solar flares, sun spots, magnetic storms, the magnetic reversal of the poles … hundreds of thousands of years of bombardment by comets and asteroids and meteors, worldwide floods, tidal waves, worldwide fires, erosion, cosmic rays, recurring ice ages … And we think some plastic bags and some aluminum cans are going to make a difference? The planet isn’t going anywhere. WE are!

The Bee-Boy’s Song by Rudyard Kipling

Bees! Bees! Hark to your bees!
"Hide from your neigbours as much as you please,
But all that has happened, to us you must tell,
Or else we will give you no honey to sell!"

A maiden in her glory,
Upon her wedding - day,
Must tell her Bees the story,
Or else they'll fly away.
Fly away -- die away --
Dwindle down and leave you!
But if you don't deceive your Bees,
Your Bees will not deceive you.

Marriage, birth or buryin',
News across the seas,
All you're sad or merry in,
You must tell the Bees.
Tell 'em coming in an' out,
Where the Fanners fan,
'Cause the Bees are just about
As curious as a man!

Don't you wait where the trees are,
When the lightnings play,
Nor don't you hate where Bees are,
Or else they'll pine away.
Pine away -- dwine away --
Anything to leave you!
But if you never grieve your Bees,
Your Bees'll never grieve you.

In, please!

In please, and thanks!

"Liquid Gold...
(sonnet # CCLXXIV)

You note a small jar on their counter, ne'er
Or rarely used it seems. And how their eyes
Get big as saucers when your bucket-size
They see. "Five gallons," with a modest air
You say, demure, with ease. Nigh debonair
Inquire if theirs is saved for teas? 'spite tries,
Yours barely lasts three months; while their supplies,
Three years! which how to use they oft despair.
You quickly say, "Of course! Why don't you know
That honey's better than all sweet'ners 'round?
No cavities provokes; in which ne'er grow
Bacter'a aye; and special touch it's found
To add to ev'ry dish in which you throw
It as replacement. Try it!" you expound."

Congratulations to sixtiesstill for winning the Karma. I had the time (and wax) to do another pour and will send out a second candle and firestarters toTaka

Cheers,
Tony P.
