So I wanted a S&W AR-15 ORC, but there are none around. There are some pre and post ban Colt AR's available. I don't know what the asking price is, but I was told the shop had an Adcor Defense for $2,500. I can only assume the Colts are that or more. Are they worth it?

I was in Blue Northern Trading Co. about a week ago and they had 3 Colt ARs in stock. $1700 price tag on them. They had a couple other ARs as well, but I didn't see who the manufacturer was. Seemed like they were getting stock in every few days or so, maybe give them a call and see if they have any.

Thanks. Ayer is a little bit of a hike. Are they worth $1,700 or do you think there is some pre ban inflation involved in the price?

For what it's worth I bought a couple per-ban Colts a couple of years ago and payed $1200 for a SP1 and $1500 for a Govt Carbine (with a few magazines shipped).

Not sure what BN is selling (or had, more than likely, they're probably gone) but Colt 6920s used to go for about $1300 under normal conditions.

Thanks guys great info. I never wanted an AR until last Nov. But I wasn't in a hurry to buy. No I want one, don't know much about them but feel like I am up against the clock with Obama. In the classifieds here someone has a SnW AR15 listed for ...get this...$3,500! I plan on visiting the shop tomorrow, so I have a limited time to educate myself with cost and quality.

Can you modify a Colt like you can a SnW? Like adding a grip or flash light or scope?

I didn't catch the name of the guy I was talking to, but he said that their distributor raised the price on them and subsequently he had to raise the price. It doesn't seem like they're raising them to ridiculous prices just because they can. In fact, most stuff related to AR they have been keeping at pre-crazy prices as best they can.

As far as it being out of your way, look around your local shops and see if they even have anything in stock. Then call BN, see what they have in stock. I live in Stoughton, which is an hour drive minimum for me (there are much closer shops to me) but BN for the most part has been relatively free of the craziness from what I can see.

Thanks. I don't mind paying the higher price if they are just passing it on. Not their fault. Just as long as they aren't raising prices just to gouge us.

Elaborate?

Over-rated. There are as good or better ARs out there that are much more reasonably priced. (Well, nothing is reasonably priced right now but in normal times.) With Colt you pay a premium tier price for a mid tier AR...

Yeah, but good luck finding any COTS guns right now that are in the "cheaper than colt but similar in quality" class. Most of those are all dried up at the moment.

This is true. It's not exactly a buyer's market lately. [sad2]

Some Colts have a different size take down hole I think it is so special parts are needed to use a different upper.

Yes, if you have a really old Colt the front take down pin is a non-standard size, but eventually they went back to the standard, I want to say in the 90s.

What are piston conversions and COTS? The shop did tell me the Adcor was gas operated

I might be thinking of something else then. Either way I don't know much about them.

COTS = Commercial Off The Shelf = you can go somewhere and buy it. Even for those who can build, things are REALLY tough right now and its tough to quickly build an AR-15 these days without poisoning the build with a few marginal parts here or there (because that's all that's around) or going over budget. (because in some cases, only brutally expensive stuff is left).

Well, all AR's are gas operated. Most are direct impingement and a few are pistons. If it's a cheap piston gun I would stay away from it.

Would I have a problem with cheap pistons with a Colt. I always try to buy the best.

I believe in buying more than you need then you will never need more.

The shop is Zero Arms.
