Colt AR's

Would I have a problem with cheap pistons with a Colt. I always try to buy the best.

Most Colts are DI gas (direct impingement, eg old school/standard gas systems) not pistons. I haven't seen a Colt piston gun yet. (They may or may not exist, don't know if Colt bothered to roll one out yet). Guns like the 6920, 6940, etc, are DI gas guns. I wouldn't even buy a piston gun on an AR platform but that's just me. DI is fine and it saves you a little weight and complexity, and it keeps the parts standard.

Thanks Mike. With this I think time may be running out.

If a Colt was the same price as a S&W, Windham Weap., Stag, etc., I would get the Colt (assuming all in exact same config.). Just cause I like that silly Pony on the side. I wouldn't pay one dollar more for one, though.

I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger. Was a little pricey at $2,500. Did I make a mistake?

That's not a little pricey, that's a lot pricey. Hard to guess what the future will bring though.

I've Set my Max bid on any Colt/BCM rifle at 1500,

and a max bid of 1100 on a S&W ORC

if i can't get one in those price ranges, then so be it, i will build one myself slowly over time.

The market for ARs has gone so crazy, it's almost gotten to the point where you can't be picky and just have to take what you can get. Almost. There are rifles out there, but prices are high and pickings are slim.

Colt is a great rifle, and if it makes you happy to own one, and you think you need one now, get out there buy one. But you've got to grab what you can get.

Exactly Tony, I was going to buy the "FS Operator" S&W AR15 ORC in November for $1250 because other than my Ruger 10/22 I really don't have a rifle I shoot. I do have a Garand, (gets heavy and hurts shoulder after many rounds) and an M1 Carbine that I never shoot. Pickings is very slim. The colt is the only one with in an hours drive I have found. And it does look cool. Even the Scottsdale Gun Club was barren.

What I am worried about is that I buy it and a year the prices drop back to normal, or I don't and can't get one with out paying even more. If I buy it and the prices drop I could rationalize it as similar to depreciation on car. You buy a car knowing you will loose money!

Are you buying it for investment? Can you afford over paying? Those are some of the questions you should ask yourself. Prices are not likely to drop for a while. If you keep your guns for a long time or will shoot the piss out of it, then buy it. If you are not sure whether you'd keep it and don't want to take a bath, then don't buy it. Wait times for AR builds or just to get parts now are crazy. Prices on GB are uber-crazy. I have an AR build that started in October and I have no idea when it will be done. I have a bolt build that has been out over 6 months. Sourcing individual parts is also difficult and pricey now. There's no good solution except to decide how bad you want one and if bad enough then pony up.

Thanks LC. I have actually decided to buy some ammo for my M1 Carbine and some stuff for my Camaro instead.

Elaborate?

Buy a Colt, you really can't go wrong. Plus it's sure to have a much better resale value than the norm. I can't imagine who would disagree that a Colt is one of the best off the shelf AR's out there. Plus, when u take it out of the safe to shoot it, you'll be proud you bought a Colt, and u should be. And don't get hung up on the DI, piston thing, it's a much debated never ending battle. If u don't want to clean ur gun alot buy a piston, if u don't care then buy one that suits ur price.

Of course there's better Ar's out there but you'll pay dearly, and they are probably better than a Colt
