Today I picked up the coolest pump riot gun that I've ever seen. It's a Stevens Model 520-30 made for Montgomery Ward. It was designed by John Moses Browning. This one was made before 1920, and it's in amazing condition.

It has an 18" barrel, all the metal parts are Parkerized, and the receiver (which looks like the one on the BAR) is solid steel and built like a tank.

The action on it is like butter (smoothest pump gun that I own, and I have more than a few)

The bolt has a locking lug that pokes up though the top of the receiver when the gun is in battery.

Oh yeah... It's a take down too.

The take down method is much better than on other Browning-designed shotguns like the Winchester Model 97 and Model 12.

On this one, you unscrew the mag tube until the locking key clears the receiver, then slide the barrel/mag assembly straight out of the bottom of the receiver.

Would be perfect for a Zoot Shoot....

Add another gun to the list. I really like the looks of this shotgun. I love older guns like that. Would go great with my Remington Model 11.

Aloha

Nice find - I picked one up as a beater a couple years ago, not in as good condition but it was only $100 out the door. Love the takedown feature for travel, makes the perfect back up during hunting season.

I also love the (absolutely no practical value but fun as hell) ability to hold the trigger and fire as fast as I can work the slide (so to speak).

Nice job.

Is that a safety inside the trigger guard? In front of the trigger.

Yes - the older version has the safety indide the trigger guard ("suicide safety" I've heard it called) and the newer variants are behind the trigger IIRC.

Best thing of these shotguns is that they seem to be the forgotten Brownings - JMB designed this gun, but it doesn't have the cult following like his other designs. You can find these fairly commonly in the used gun rack for sweet prices.

Noy-ice! I've been itching for a Stevens but the newer bird emblemed receivers are a kill joy. I'd love me one of them slab side originals with the 18" barrel!

I do have a vintage Win 1897 though and that's an equally fun 12 ga shooter, which has the exposed hammer but not the unique bottom feed and eject of the Stevens. The Win 96 also has the pump disabled disconnector that lets you pump and dump. It's a feature that I rarely use but warms my heart that I have it just because the ATF disallows it today.

Where can I find info on old Stevens shotguns? I don't get very concise results with a Google search.

I'm no Stevens expert but was just going by my blue book value guide description, of which the publishing brand escapes me, and I don't have it handy. Seems like most modern Stevens have the bird side that obviously doesn't effect performance but looks kind of fuddy.
