I saw a good deal on an AK receiver and I think I'm going to start a build. It will be my first from scratch. For some reason the AK platform is more interesting to me for a build than an AR.

Does anyone know of a good resource for AK building that they use? I googled, of course, but would like to see if someone has some experience with a good resource.

uuhhh. you are at the resource. A couple folks who post here regularly have much experience assembling AKs. A build party took place not too long ago, there is always talk of another. Search around here and you will find the info you seek.

What kind of good deal, do tell?

There was on posted in the member's forum. I think it expired, but it was a $50 AK receiver.

Aiee, nodak spud has some, don't know if they are any good. A while back I found a site that had them for around 30$... can't find the site again.

If you build them, they will come.

Bend your own if your a cheap ass. Too difficult you may say? Then buy a WASR.

IF YOU WANT TO BE A MAN, BEND IT, WELD IT, BURN IT, SMASH IT, AND RULE YOUR LIFE.

[laugh2] good idea, droog, before and after!

I don't think that there is a unified AK building resource, like MG42.us for MG42s. There are many tutorials with various degree of documentation scattered around the web, never mind youtube. Read as many as you can, some have gaps that will be filled by others.

There are forums like weaponeer and another one that I can't remember, that deal with just building shit that shoot and have many subtopics. People there are nice to ask if you want to make weird shit that haven't been done before.

AK is a nice platform because you can start with barreled kit and a receiver, then increase difficulty by fitting your own barrel (or turning your own), bending your own receiver or welding up demilled one. The more work you do, generally, the cheaper you can get parts. For some things, it's the only way.

When you collect/built every variation of AK (impossible), you can move on to PSL/FPKs, RPKs then to PKMs. Your skills and tools you gather along the way will serve you well in any other builds you may want to undertake.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I guess I need to learn what tools I need for all this first. The videos in AK builder have drills, taps and presses none of which I have (I might have some taps around but no idea if they're the right size)

I've begun a build myself, first timer here. It's quite a learning curve so far. I got some good direction from Flint and 9999, got the rivet presses from AKmachine, he takes Paypal, made it easy for me. I was also turned onto AK-builder.com, needed a few parts to put this kit together, but after talking with Curtis the owner, I bought a whole other AMD-65 kit because the kit I bought in the picture for $475 is sadly lacking a few things and the new barrel assy. has an issue with the gas block\line being the wrong length for an AMD. After I purchased this 1st kit from a Ma gun dealer at West Springfield gun show, I found lots wrong with it. I spoke in length about this kit with the guy I thought was the owner, but it seems his info he gave me was not accurate. The barrel was supposed to be ready to go, it's not, nothing is drilled or pinned, not to mention it's the wrong set-up for an AMD. It will work fine after it is drilled and pinned.... on a different receiver.

That leads me to a warning, not all AK receivers are the same, there are many variables you have to know about before starting a build, do your homework, know who you are talking to and dealing with... go to the Nodakspud webpage here, lots of info about different receivers, not to mention lots of links to other parts and info... I should start a thread soon on my build... when I get my order in Wed from AK-builder, maybe I'll start a thread with pictures. I also bought a $100 12ton press fromHarbor freight and a bench top drill press, gonna be building a few of these babies... [grin]
