My dad has always been a rifle and shotgun guy and now he wants a pistol for home defense and occasional range time with me. He is interested in a Walther PK380. Here's the kicker, he has bad wrists so I need something that wont beat his wrists up. I was thinking of a heavy 357 revolver with 38 Special in it. This might reduce the punishment on his wrist. That way I can shoot 357 out of it too. Haha. Any ideas?

I agree with the .357/ .38 revolver strategy. No stinkin' slides to rack. That's what my Dad carries.

I've got a 4" GP100 that is very soft when shooting 38 spl.
+1.

i got my dad a GP100 and my mom an SP101. Both 4" barrel. Excellent choice for everything except pocket carry. 38sp has less recoil than a fart and even 357 is quite tame with these revolvers.

one note though, its amazing how much different the 3" GP100 feels vs the 4"...recoil and flash much more noticeable to me.

also reason for a revolver is simplicity of load/unload. My parents would undoubtedly forget to chamber or unchamber a round in an auto, so revolver is the obvious choice.

My SP101 with 3" barrel is not tame - I have large hands and end up with a couple of bloody knuckles after 15 rounds or so shooting .357.

agree i find the 3" a bit rough to shoot w full power 357 loads.
however for reasons quite beyond my understanding the 4" SP101 shoots like a totally different gun. soft like pillow. also the 4" model has adjustable sights which i find helpful for hitting targets past 25 yards.

The Walther PPK is overrated - it looks cool, gets the 007 seal of approval, but other than that doesn't have a lot going for it (Unless you have a WWII collectible with appropriate proof marks). It shoots a wimpy caliber and uses ammo that always seems to be on the hard to find list.

38 with 357 is an excellent choice, especially if the owner is serious about self defense but is not interested in becoming a "gun person".
