Hit the woods after work yesterday. Nice afternoon weather was great. Just started to walk back to my truck and on a down hill I slipped on the dry leaves.......feet went out from under me and I landed on my right elbow HARD which immediately shot a pain into my right shoulder I've never had in my life. f***. 3/4 mile from the truck and my shoukder is f***ed. I knew it was gonna be an er trip it hurt so bad. I couldn't even move my right arm it felt tight and locked.......I bent over to pick up my muzzle loader with my left hand while keeping my right elbow tucked against my side and felt a pop.......ooh......better I can move my right shoulder but the pain excruciating. I made it back to the truck cussing the whole way.......keeping my right elbow tucked against my side the pain was manageable but the second I tried to move it omg......anyway. er doc says sounds like I dislocated it and got it back in on my own while I was in the woods 😂
Doc says Gotta follow up with ortho cuz if it's still this painful I may have done some damage to the rotator cuff. f*** me.

Pain is insane still. Is what it is.

Good luck out there everyone. No way whacko can shoulder a long gun for the foreseeable future.

Sucks getting hurt in the woods, hope you heal quickly.

Some questions:
If it were your knee instead of your shoulder and you couldn't walk, did anyone know where you were and what time you were to be expected to come out of the woods, so they could come looking for you if you didn't show up?

Did you have a phone or radio with you to be able to call someone for help?

Did you have sufficient clothing, gear, some food, water, to spend the night in the woods if you had to?

Just curious as to how prepared you were when a nice afternoon turns into hell when you're injured, alone, it's getting dark and cold and you're immobile.🤔

I text a screen shot of my truck location and where I'm sitting from onx hunt app to my wife, son, and brother every time I hunt alone.

Always have my cell phone and when I text the screenshots I let the same 3 people know when I plan to be back to my truck.

As far as extra clothes and stuff to spend the night......I'm never more than 1.5 miles from.my truck and by letting 3 people know my plan and screenshots of where I parked and where I sit I'd be found within an hour of them not getting a text or call that I got back to my truck at the time I told told them I'd be done. That's when I hunt locally

Up north we dont hubt alone and have a small amount of food for overnight, fire starter, matches, and clothes on us.

I’m sorry to hear that. It is so easy to lose your footing and go down this time of year with all the leaves down. They can get slippery and you can’t see the unevenness of the ground underneath.

Hopefully you will have a speedy recovery and be back on your feet and out chasing Bambi’s parents again directly.

Bob

Thanks Bob.

I'll live vicariously thru my brother and son this weekend. I'll be rooting for them.

Get well soon. Even the best laid plans can go wrong out there.

I move like an old man when I'm I'm out there. Hills are by far the most dangerous. Especially when there are leaves, loose rocks and dead fall. Add moisture and it's a death trap. While it may sound obvious, I never take the next step unless the foot currently on the ground is firmly attached to the ground. Meaning, the other foot can slip but I'm not going down. Also when it's steeper I use the side edges of my boot to go down hills. Or, I jam my heels into the hillside creating a flat spot with each step. I have stiff soled boots. Last line of defense are trekking poles. With trekking poles you never go down. I cannot recommend trekking poles enough. They are a game changer. And they make for great shooting sticks. As you can tell, I'm neurotic about this. 🙃

I've had 7 shoulder surgeries: 5 on left, 2 on right - wrestling.... Arrghhhh... Almost went pre-med back in the day, so understand anatomy & physiology pretty well - especially the shoulder.

Ice and rest for next few days. 20 mins on.... 20 mins off...

As a starting premise: Do not get surgery! PT to start and see how it goes. Give the joint time to heal & then make decisions. Standard procedure is an xray, which will show zero. Next in line will be MRI. Docs make heaps of money cutting you up.

Strengthening bands are great. No movement above your head - 90 degrees.

Wishing you the very best! Been there, done that.... Unfortunately...

How is the shoulder?
Still hurts like a bitch. More mobil than it was last weekend but still not right. Va says dec 10 is earliest they can get me an ortho apt.

Thanks for asking.

Deer season is a bust unless I can get comfy using my blackhawk revolver left handed....maybe with a shooting stick under 35 yards id be confident......handguns are legal in the areas I hunt in nh so may try that route this weekend....not solo....I'd be out there with my brother and son

Shoulder shows small improvement. I have a meeting at the club tonight so may take my blackhawk 357 and test it left handed after the meeting....see if I'll feel confident taking a shot on a deer with it. If it goes OK I'll take it sat morning.

Hope you don't need rotator cuff surgery, but when I had mine done I swapped to shooting lefty for a while. Little bit of practice and I bet you'll be able to shoot decently.

Just last Saturday when pheasant hunting I did a little 'skiing' down a steep hill that was covered in dry leaves. All I could think of in the moment was not to F up my favorite shotgun. [laugh] Hope your gun is OK.

I didn't ski in the dry leaves.....my feet went about 3 feet into the air and came down on my right elbow. Oof

Guns fine......had my old thompson center impact......thing looks like it'd been dragged behind a truck on a gravel road. But it's killed a ton of deer and still shoots straight.

Put 2 cylinders thru my 357 blackhawk at the club. Not gonna work. Not much pain even shooting right handed but my arms week ans i couldn't steady the pistol. f*** me.

Went home and grabbed my browning a5 (cleared it of course) and did some dry firing in the basement. I can get my right hand up to the trigger which was impossible a week ago....but im just still shaky on that arm. .I may take the slug barrel off and put the full choke barrel on and load up with buckshot. If I can get a deer within 25 yards I feel confident enough I make a lethal hit.

I'm hitting the woods with my wife tomorrow ahell have her 20 gauge slug gun....I'll be there for backup.

You really feel the need to get out there with the pain you’re in ? I love to hunt deer, pheasant, quail. But it doesn’t rise to that level.

It is good to keep some strong painkillers in the car, you get a head start on the way to the hospital, might be waiting a while before being treated.

It sounds like you definitely did more damage than just a dislocation. I had dislocated my right shoulder 3 times before needing surgical repair. It would be sore once reduced but nothing like what you describe. Best of luck on the doctor follow-up and good luck in the woods.

It's not over yet......got the browning with full choke and 3 inch buckshot. Heading in the woods now. Not giving up.
Buckshot is for people, not deer. [laugh] On a deer you ruin too much meat with multiple pellet hits.

Good luck on the hunt. Watch your step!!!

Out to 30 yards this gun only spreads out about the size of a steering wheel. Aiming for the ribs.....should be fine. It's really my only option with my week right arm.

I'm still giving the season what I can in nh. Shirt sits with my browning and buckshot. Not ideal but it's what my body will allow for now. 10 dec is my ortho apt and hoping I don't need surgery.....but I'm still in pain 2 weeks after the fall so......not looking good.

Just busting balls!! Hope you fill the freezer.

If you think shooting it is going to be painful, you better take some pain killers before moving, gutting, or skinning it. [laugh]

I worked with my neighbor skinning the big buck he harvested here, and my hands were sore for a couple of days.

Either way, hope you enjoy the hunt.

I feel your pain. After putting it off for twenty plus years I finally had my right rotator cuff done last week.
The MRI showed one torn tendon, when they got in there it was four and they relocated one of my bicep tendons.
I tend to be mixed handed because I'm cross dominate. I write righty but I shoot lefty. I can shoot a handgun righty fairly well, but not a long gun.

Oof.

Hoping I'm not gonna need all that.

I know you were busting balls. I got help a phone call away if I do tag something.
