I also bought a preban Colt from out of state in near new condition and paid $850. As for your Bushmaster in question,
the price could be anywhere from $700-1800 depending on where and whom is selling. As to what a "fair" price is,
that's totally subjective and wholly based on how much you're willing to pay. I personally am not hung up on the
name of my AR (though there are some names I refuse to buy).

So if it were between buying a Colt preban for around $800-900 or a Bushmaster for $1200+, I'd choose the Colt
every time. Afterall, it's the forged lower that matters most!

I agree with recon_sine Preban pricing is definitely
subjective.

If you find one from someone that doesnt know what
they're selling, you might end up being able to bag
one for 700-800 bucks or so. The typical going MA
consignment rate though is more like $1200 or
more. Yeah, the price is high but I don't blame the
sellers, it's just capitalism.

You could poke around on gunbroker or other places for
low SN colts or bushmasters.... might take a bit of
legwork but you should be able to snag something for
less than $1000 if you're willing to spend the time.
