Nice looking 629 !
It's the difference between work shoes and dress-up - flats are nice - pumps are classy.

I have always liked the look of wood on a stainless/nickle pistol!
I have gone the other way. On my hi-powered revolvers 44mag, 10mm and the PD version 357's I have switched to rubber. All of these guns came with wood grips and the wood looks great, however the rubber is more comfortable to shoot and I am a shooter not a looker.

TBP, I don't do it just for looks.
I experience LESS recoil with Kim Ahrends' grips compared to rubber Hogues because of how well Ahrends fit my hand.
I doubt I will suffer any ill-effects indistinguishable from those of old age.The kinetic energy is still be transfered to you
