Wife and I just got back from a Gold Wing motorcycle meet in Edgefield South Carolina. The meet is a function of the Goldwing Facts. com members. On arrival we were given a sheet of suggested rides and other information. Near the bottom of the sheet was a posting, for those interested, to tour the Palmetto shooting complex at the National Wild Turkey Federation property.
At 10AM Thursday morning around 30 of us, on Goldwing motorcycles rode the mile and a half from our hotel to the complex. Once there we were introduced to the people who run the facility, given a history of the complex, and told we were going to shoot sport clays. Shotgun safety issues were covered as well as gun safety and proper handling of a firearm. (shotgun)
We then were issued semi auto Remington shotguns and ammo. In teams of two we got into a sort of hybrid golf cart set up for shooting sports. The course is on a dirt road that goes in a huge circle with shooting stations every few hundred feet. Each station launches clays from a hidden location to simulate perhaps a bird busting from cover or a rabbit on the run. Each station is in the woods so you are shooting with a full view of trees and bushes and not an open field view like skeet. Each station had an instructor for pointers and safety. Most of us, including myself had never shot this type of shooting style. We all shot around ten stations.
What a blast. It took me a few stations to adjust to the lead distance and swing angles. I am not ready for Olympic trials but did fairly well. Starting out the instructor, who knew I am a pistol guy said your shooting at it, shoot it where it is going to be. Then things got better.
The shooting complex is 300 acres. Adjoining the shooting complex is another 470 acres to be used for wildlife conservation, all owned and managed by the National Wild Turkey Federation. The complex is still under construction and will cost 18 million dollars when completed. Around 10 million have been spent so far.
When complete it will contain 3 18 station sport clay ranges, 5 trap and skeet fields, pistol, rifle and 3 gun ranges, five archery ranges all ADA compliant. A club house has been designed and is in the process of preliminary construction.
I do not work for nor am I affiliated with the National Wild Turkey Federation. During our 3 day meeting we had 2 banquets at an outdoor pavilion (covered) complete with kitchen facilities provided to us by the NWTF.
Whats not to like? Motorcycle riding, sport clay shooting, woods and meadows. Ride long and often.
