Ok, so I want to parse this definition because I've heard many different interpretations of the word. It's time to go to the wellspring of knowledge that is NES and ask; What exactly makes a rifle an EBR?

For instance. Is an M16 or an AR15 an EBR? What about an M1A (assuming it has select fire). If those are Enhanced, what is a non-Enhanced Battle Rifle? For instance, a Mosin is a Battle Rifle (assuming it's not the carbine) but it's hard to imagine someone referring to it as enhanced. Alternately what features make the AR enhanced (if it is) when the Mosin isn't?

I always thought EBR stood for Evil Black Rifle [smile]

I've also seen the term "main battle rifle" thrown around... is this the same as "enhanced battle rifle"?

Ahh yes, well it can. In some cases I think that's exactly what people mean. But specifically, I've heard of people referring to modified M14s (for example) as Enhanced Battle Rifles.

There are two ways I have heard the term "EBR" used.

I have most often heard the acronym "EBR" to mean 'evil black rifle' - as a sort of inside joke against the gun banners who get their panties all in a bunch whenever they see a rifle that is all black and mean looking.

I have also heard the term "enhanced battle rifle" used when referrring to rifles such as the M14 that have been retrofitted into a more modern stock system like the Troy or Sage - which takes the M14/M1A action and fits it into a stock with Picatinny rails for mounting accessories, a pistol grip, and usually an adjustable stock.

Ahh...perhaps that explains it. The enhanced must refer to the fact that is it employed in the field in a different configuration than initially allocated.

Main battle rifle generally refers to rifles in a big rifle caliber like 7.62x51, .30-'06, etc. As opposed to assault rifle calibers like 5.56x45 and 7.62x39.
