I have the shield 40. started to shoot 357 sig in another gun and like it. thought it would be cool to have the shield in 357 sig.

research i have done so far is that there is play between the breach and barrel dropping a 9mm barrel into a 40 slide (9mm barrel is a few thousands slimmer left to right, i forget the exact measurement) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flnFIzI6MIw) , for that reason it would have to be a whole slide to eliminate the play. cheapest way would be to buy the whole shield 9 to do it for reliable function.

ive never handled the shield 9 so i dont know if there is enough meat at the chamber to be able to bore it out for 357 sig. anyone have chamber thickness measurements of the shield 9mm barrel? probably get a bunch of weird looks walking into a gun shop with the micrometers

havent found anything as thin as the shield which is why i thought of this (glocks, even xDs is wider, nevermind the price). if they just made a shield 45 the same thickness i wouldn't have the 40 or look for a 357 sig solution

sorry for rambling, but looking for thoughts on this

Given the performance of modern 9mm hollow points (like Federal HST), I really, really don't see the point.

This is what we call an exercise in going full retard. Also, I would not want to run full bore (something like underwood, etc) .357 Sig out of a gun that small.

You'd probably have an easier time having a custom barrel made with the external dimensions of your .40 but chambered for .357. Trying to convert a 9mm into a .357 would be more work.

If you are dead set on going this route, I'm also on the N. Shore. You are more than welcome to take measurements of my Shield.

Didn't S&W have an issue with the .40's blowing up? Not sure the details, but i personally don't have a desire to run .357 sig out of that platform.... m&p compact, sure..
Shield, no thanks

If I were you, and I'm not.

and if I reloaded .357 sig, which I never would

I'd pick up a Glock 33, which is a model nobody else seems to want.

missed that part the first time ...................

The Glock 36 is really not enough bigger than a Shield to worry about, when I compared them side by side I realized that I had no use for the Shield

Doesn't 40 all ways blow up?

I use to buy into the NES hatred of .40.... then I spent a bunch of time shooting and reloading it and I actually like it quite a bit.

It's good in a defensive gun like a M&P Compact as your maximizing the capacity of the pistol. It's cheap to reload (2500 bullets cost me less than $230 shipped) and I can remain standardized in primers and powder across 38spcl/357mag, 9mm and 40s&w.... one powder, one primer and I don't have to change my dillon primer system over for any round I reload in quantity.

After doing a quick Google search.... good luck, as it doesn't seem this is going to be easy or inexpensive. I would also persoanlly question if the shield can stand up to the added preasures of 357 sig

It's a joke, 40= wimp 10 mm

get a Sig P938....this has nothing to do with the thread but I felt like saying it. Have a nice day too.

Useful info. Thank you.

Just looked up my Lyman manual and the pressures are much higher.

Max 9-32500 cup max listed
Max 40- 23500 cup
Max sig- 39600 psi (hodgdon site has psi as well) (about 37933 cup per the formula found here www.shootingsoftware.com/ftp/psicuparticle2.pdf but there's a fairly large standard deviation with the formula)

And multiple times in the article is says there is no direct conversion formula

In SAAMI psi spec, I believe 357 sig is about 5000 psi hight than both 9mm and 40 s&w ( 40000 psi max vs 35000 psi max ) that's a pretty substantial difference if correct
