Anyone done this?

I got out today and got a nice coal using the bow drill method. Had the kids trying it too.

Anyone practice these things?

What's your thoughts? Useful skill, party trick or just junk?

Seems like a useful skill and a great party trick.

I was thinking, in today's modern age, if you carried a small loop of nichrome wire, you could always start a fire using any handly battery or electricity source (cell phone, penlight, etc).

We had to do this in the Scouts to get out fire starting badge.

If you can find some good vine, you can do that with a curved stick and a rock.

I don't practice, but any way to make fire isn't junk. It doesn't happen fast, but if you keep at it, it will work.
