In researching firearm pricing I see the MSRP's of the firearms I like and was wondering what is a good general guideline for pricing ? 5% under MSRP ? 10% or do most shops just stick to the MSRP ?

It would depend on the shop...i buy from 1 store that his prices are always about 30_60 cheaper then a few other local shops n i find his prices are right on point of msrp if not a few dollers cheaper

I see firearms as a commodity, and the market (micro market for a shops area) as a big determining factor.

We have seen superb retail prices at FS in Woburn, yet I just got a new SR1911 at my local (Tombstone) for a dollar less than what FS sells it at. My wife bought a Ruger 101 at FS that was 60 less than anywhere else.

At my local shop, most new firearms are priced about the same as other locals, but a good shop knows his customers and can mark down if he has volume, or charge a premium for a demand item. Factor in time and travel, your local may still be "a better value".

Being in Namnychusetts doesn't help us as s consumer with regards to prices, either.

Well there are lots of definitions of MSRP I guess. If you look at the RUger website an SP101 is "MSRP" of about $650 depending on caliber and model. I would NEVER pay that and have never even seen one in a shop for that. I got mine for $435 brand new in the box. Same goes for S and W revolvers that I have seen on the smith website and what they actually sell for in the shops. I've often wondered if the manufacturers put the MSPR way high on the website in order to have consumers think they are getting a "deal" when they see the actual price at the shops. Thoughts anyone?

As a general guideline, figure MSRP less 25%. This isn't always right, depending on demand and the shop, but it is a general guide. With the lessening of demand that is happening, prices might get sharper. Some shops are reducing prices, and running sales. Four Seasons, while not always the lowest, usually prices very well. Also, if they can, they might meet a lower price.
