I am looking to possibly purchase a 1938 german luger, Is anyone out there a specialist of these firearms? looking to have a few questions answered. anyone know if there is some sort of data base out there to look up serial numbers or who would have had it? I have a case with a name in it and want to do some research.

There is no serial number data base that I'm aware of. Pictures are always a must when trying to gain real info in terms of originality and correctness. Is the pistol matching? Frame and slide will have a letter code and a 4 digit serial number with many of the small parts carrying just the last two of the serial number
If I remember correctly the bluing process was changed in 1937 so there should be no strawing on a 1938
