I'd be curious if it is any use at all here in the winter. Obviously it won't work as well, but could I get it to do something, like sterilize water? I'm wondering what to expect when I make or buy one (it is in the plans).

I tried using my solar cooker in the winter and it didnt work well. I think this might be able to get up to a higher temp and cook in the winter. I will probably have to insulate around the box though as I think the wind will suck the heat away. I havent really thought about it for cooking in the winter as we heat with wood so will have a cooking source all winter. I will try to set this up sometime soon and see what temps I can get out ofit.

It seems like a great idea, I would have the same question though. How well will it work in the snow? Could you pack it in the snow?

I've been using Global Sun Ovens for 4-5 years now. Purchased a second one a year after the first so I could cook more at once. I often use it as the equivalent to a crock pot. Everything I have cooked in it has a delicious and unique flavor. Meats are always tender and cooking bread works well, too. During the winter you need to angle it lower to catch more sun and since there is less sun in the sky at that time you are limited to shorter cooking times. Often I will put it out in the morning and when I get home from work finish cooking it inside. That reduces the in-house cooking time and still gives it the sun oven flavor.

They work great if you are having people over for a cookout since you can cook a part of the meal outside and free up the kitchen for other things. Great conversation starter that leads into all sorts of prepping topics.
