I recently purchased a Glock from a board member and decided I wanted to have the slide/barrel refinished. I received a phone call this morning from Glock stating that upon inspection of the gun, they found a crack in the frame.

They are going to refinish my barrel and slide for free, install Glock night sights for free, AND send me a new frame for free! What a warranty! This is my first Glock and I am impressed.

So essentially I am getting a NEW gun. My question is this; The new frame will obviously have a new serial number. Glock will be shipping the gun directly back to me (not going through an FFL). Do I need to re-register the firearm? Is having a non-registered serial number on the frame ever going to be an issue in MA?

Do you mean Glock is doing so for you as a MA resident? If so, this would be a departure from previous Glock policy. Replacement with a like kind, but difference serial number, is allowed under federal law, however, most gun manfacturers don't do this as a matter of policy. Glock was sufficiently spooked by the MA nonsense as to not offer frame replacement to MA residents. If they ship it to you, you need to file a new FA-10 on the new gun.

FYI, if the frame you get has a serial number of the form G###, it was manufactured as a replacement. If it has a 2 or 3 letter prefix, it was scavenged off another gun (with the 2 letter ones being very old guns).

Rob, one correction . . .

Glock Legal told me that if the person was active LE, they WOULD replace the frame and ship back direct. They told me that they would NOT do so (except with an old frame, pre-1998) for any retired LEO or mere citizen who resided in MA. This was a few years ago, when you and I were discussing the Target Roster with them.

Glock did such a nice job refinishing my G22 that it almost made me want to keep it. I sent it to them wrapped in bubble wrap, finish worn after thousands and thousands of rounds and shoved in a cardboard box. They sent it back completely, (and I mean completely) redone, spit shined and tucked neatly in Glock Tupperware - even threw in a new cleaning kit, manual and mag loader - looked like it was new on the shelf! If every gun company treated their customers like Glock, the world would be a better place....

Just for S*** and Giggles how did you send those Glocks back to the MFG?
I have a pre 1998 (think I bought it in 1988) Glock 19 and it needs to be refinished and also a warranty recall on something. Spoke to Glock and they will take care of it all for free.

Yes, I am a MA resident and the rep I spoke with on the phone specifically stated they would ship it back directly to me. I guess we shall see how it pans out.

Send it to

Glock inc

Smyrna, GA 30082-7204

Include a note with your return address, what you want done to the firearm, and in my case, a $60 check for the barrel / slide refinish.

I think the slide alone is $40 and the barrel is $20. You can give them a call to find out more. They were very helpful.

G21

I sent Glock a G21 for a total refurb. They lost the case I sent it in. Came back completely brand new with a whole slew of new parts and they threw in 3 extra mags for the trouble, for $100, you cant beat it, I was very happy!

Thanks,

My G19 has a sliver of a chip missing from the frame around the mag well. It just showed up one day but I suspect I might have slammed a mag in too hard. Do anybody think that qualifies for a new frame through Glock warranty? It doesn't seem to affect function but the gun fanatic part of me thinks I should get it replaced if I can.

The sliver missing is probably about 1 in. by 1/4 in. in a half elliptical shape.

Send it in to Glock and have them assess - my bet is they'll repair/replace. I'm not sure if they still do it this way, but I sent mine in with a blank check. They called me, gave me the estimate, (I think it was $140.00), told me what the gun needed and what they thought would be beneficial to replace. They completely transformed the old worn shooter into a new gun...It was amazing.

Were you, as Bill Ruger would have put it, a "simple civilian" or are you using some sort of official or LE status?

JUst out of curiosity was this a pre 10/98 Glock or a post 10/98 Glock

I was under the impression Glock would not ship any Gen3 frames into MA, so if you had a Gen2 and needed a new frame, rather than give you a Gen3, they had to scrounge around the spare parts bins for a Gen2 frame.

So the 64 dollar question is if you are a civilian, and have a Gen3 Glock, that for one reason or another needs a frame replacement, remembering it is not illegal for a civilian to acquire a Gen3 Glock in a FA-10 FTF transaction, how does Glock handle this?

Yes, it's legal for you to ship to them and for them to ship the replacement frame back to you. It's a repair of a broken part in which they replace the broken part. The fact that it's the frame is of no consequence.

You can save some money and ship 2nd day air with UPS.

They don't have to handle anything. Since no "transfer" occurs it is what it is... a frame replacement. Repair = bypass of the normal transfer mechanics- eg, you don't have to do a transfer on something you already own!

even if the serial numbers don't match? or do they swap the numbers/re number it?

I bet it comes back with the same serial #. I had S&W replace the frame on my 1911 and it came back with the same #. From what I was told that is the norm because a serial # change would require allot more paperwork on both ends because it is a different gun at that point.

They were clear about it having a new serial number. They cannot swap them out like that.

Yes they CAN legally change a frame and give it the same S/N. This is specifically allowed per BATFE rules (ONLY the mfr can do this, nobody else). However, Glock chooses to do it differently and thus the new S/N.

Some other companies will replace the frame and serialize it the same as the old one (which they must destroy and account for in their records).
