Got a GSG-5

I just bought the same one, says "first anniversary edition" down the side. I was surprised it was only out for a year... I thought this was a bit older.

I'll be bringing it to the range for the first time this weekend.

Any issues with the rear sight not adjusting for elevation? That surprised me a bit. I'm wondering if I'll want to get a replacement for that, or just put a red dot scope on top. (What is a good mount that converts the top to picatinny?)

This should help with your rear sight and scope mount questions...
(I have an ATI mount and Sightmark red dot on mine)

The troubleshooting and modifications stickeys are helpful as well.

I just tried it today for the first time. I was using 25 yard range and I set the notch sight over on the left side, so that I was using the 25 meter hole. Initially the group was 4" left of center, and amazingly I was able to zero it with 2 adjustment attempts (despite having no idea how much to turn the screw per MOA).

Using a front rest, most of the groups are 1/2", within 1/2" of where I am aiming, so I'm pleased by that. I think I'm limited at getting a group any better due to the sights... the front sight post covers about 6" wide area of paper at 25 yards. Standing without support, I am rather worse at it, like 4" group.

Trigger pull is long but doesn't bother me. It is a light pull and that's what matters to me, so it is a good trigger.

It fed flawlessly for 50 rounds then started to have FTF, until I gave up around 100 rounds... every other round was a FTF. This is CCI Blazer ammo, which feeds perfectly in my Ruger MK III and nearly perfectly in my 10/22. I looked at each failed round, and every one was very lightly tapped by the firing pin... a barely noticeable impression on it.

Any idea why this is happening? Maybe I just need to oil it better? No, I was not touching the mag while firing.

I'm not familiar with CCI Blazer .22, but I have zero problems with Federal Bulk pak, so that's what I stay with. Does CCI have an exposed lead bullet? I've had much better luck with copper-clad ammo (like Federal Bulk) in all my .22 conversions.

Don't give up. You just need to find its preferred .22.

The Blazer is all lead. Come to think of it, I'm not sure if I have any .22 that isn't lead, except maybe the mini-mag hollow points.

My GSG will eat anything but Remington GB's. The Federal & Winchester Bulk packs run flawless through it but the GB's will FTF just about every other one. Now my MKIII will eat any of those 3 [smile]

I don't buy any lead 22lr anymore just copper washed. In my GSG I have found that Aguila hyper velocity copper washed fed flawlessly. The other ammo I think I was shooting recently through it was Winchester high velocity copper washed hp's which also fed well. I also tend to oil my guns very liberally which may have contributed to it's smooth performance.

I'll try some better ammo, but I went to clean it tonight and had a bit of a problem (which may explain the FTF):

Those two long post thingies are sticking way out the back, preventing the bolt stop from being pulled down. They weren't out there yesterday. I can't disassemble it since those two things are blocking it. They appear to have screw heads but a flathead screwdriver has no effect on them (I didn't try too hard -- didn't want to mess it up). Any ideas?

"bolt return spring guides", they are called.

Oops I'm an idiot... for some reason, the bolt isn't always going back towards the front when I have a magazine out. That's why they are sticking out. Shouldn't the bolt always move forward from its catched position if I remove a mag and then pull the handle back and then let it go forward again? Odd....

Anyway, after several remove/insert of magazine, I managed to get the bolt forward. Seems to be working OK now... now to find the copper ammo...

If you can find the Federal Bulk packs, they seem to shoot the best out of most of my guns. I have an older rifle which is picky with ammo. I started shooting the Federal and consistency was much better.

The CCI SV/HV lead and copper has been overly waxy as of late. I've had to clean much more crap out of the bolt and chamber area, not to mention the bore.

I picked up 2 boxes of the Federal ammo up in Hudson, NH's Walmart today. I was surprised they had any, since that was about all they had.... talk about bare shelves. I'm eager to try it but I'll probably wait until tomorrow.

My GSG5SD has exhibited a host of issues that it didn't have when it was new. FTF's, stovepiping, bolt doesn't stay open etc. All the same stuff that you see posted by others. A new one however is that I'll get the gun sighted in so that it'll drive tacks and then after a couple mags of ammo, it'll be off by something like 6" in elevation suddenly. The solution to that is that the barrel set-screw located underneath the barrel at the rearward end of the foregrip is coming loose. That allows the barrel to swim around. I am going to fix it with some locktite. The next issue that I am going to tackle is the hold openfeature on the bolt. The reason it doesn't stay open is because of insufficient pressure from the button on the side of the magazine when the last round is fired. The button on the left side of the magazine is what trips the bolt hold-open lever. I'm thinking of putting a lighter spring on the hold-open lever so that the magazine more effectively can lift it. The other problem may be that the lever is getting sticky because of where it is located. It is right in the way of all the dirt and blowback that comes out of the chamber. I'll post results and how it works out.
