I just got a great deal on a standard wood stocked Mossberg 500 pump action, I have seen lots of them tricked out with some neat tactical stuff.

However, I am wanting to avoid the expensive mistakes, and hope that some here have already done this mod gun, and point me in the direction of the good stuff.

Ideas???

dont do it, you will avoid spending any money[smile] No really I did this to a 870 several years ago. I have since stripped all the crap off and only have the exstended mag and HD spring from Tanks rifle shop. Only one I have had , that works.
tatctical sights http://www.xssights.com/store/shotgun.html. not really need if you are tossing buck shot at close range.
I found a used set of wood for 20.00 cut it down a bit to shorten a little( mostly for cold weather dear hunting) nad have ny 21" smooth boor barrel. I have a old 5 shell holder that mounts to the reciever. which is all steel construction and very well made.

Stay away from the low price tactical crap. It will fail when needed.
I spent about 300is on all the tacticool crap....you can buy a out of the box tactical for a bit more from rem or mossy

basically this is what I ended up with. http://www.impactguns.com/store/047700811987.html

Possibly, can you post pics of your Mossy 500?

I would shorten the stock to suit, add a magazine extension, a light either on the forearm or on a rail, and maybe a side saddle ammo carried. Oh,and don't forget a sling. Not a carrying strap for shouldering the weapon but a real one or two-point tactical sling that lets you wear the gun on your chest when you need your hands free. Two point slings are by far the easiest to use, IME.

At HD distances you can aim just fine with a brass bead at the end of an 18 to 20 inch barrel.

+1. If I can shoot all my slugs offhand into a 6" circle at 50 yards using only the bead, you can hit the guy 15 feet down your hallway with the same bead. No need for tacticool sights for a HD shotgun (although beware, shot patterns at HD distances are almost negligible)

Blackhawk Knoxx Spec-Ops Recoil-reducing stock (it's adjustable like a CAR-15 but since the Moss 500 is NOT a semi-auto, the AWB does not apply and you are free to do this). Your shoulder will thank you!!

A tactical sling. Anywhere from $12 to $50. V-Tac seems to be highly recommended.

Maybe a tactical light mounted on it. Check out what Liotec has as Surefire will cost you ~$300! I think that a Liotec with mount may well be less than $150, but you'll have to check.

This. I highly recommend it.

Here's what I started off with:

Based on suggestions, and local availability, I went with the Spec OPS Knoxx stock set:

Here's my 500a. I got the JIC package for a really good deal brand new. Before I even shot it I put on the ATI adjustable stock. At the manchester show last weekend I found a tac rail made to clamp onto the lower tube and a really cheap Swat Force rail mount light. The light will probably be changed out, but I want to see how long it will last.

I had a real tacticool 500, spent a lot of money buying Mesa Tactical gear for it. Then I realized it was all a waste of money for me, as I would rather have a plain configuration shotgun, less crap to fumble with. Now all those parts are sitting in my junk box waiting for me to get around to sell them, and the 500 has the wood furniture, 18.5 inch barrel and a fabric shell holder on the stock.

Just my experience.

Mine doesn't even have a shellholder. It's a plain jane deer/field combo from dick's with a 70 dollsr 18.5" barrel and no other additions. I have no qualms about relying on it.

I think I grew out of the tacticool pump shotgun phase when I started building AR's [wink]. With a pump shotgun, I have become a bit of a minimalist.

Its hard for me to tell the barrel length on it.
I might suggest shortening the barrel to 18 1/2 in. (if it is'nt already).
For a HD gun I'd preffer the shortest available barrel allowed by law.Don't quote me I belive Fed. law mandates a shotgun barrel must be longer then 18". If I'm wrong someone should be along to firmly correct me,soon.

Possibly ,a decent mountable flashlight ?

I agree,I went with the Knoxx stock, but primarily for its function.

That's right, minimum 18" barrel AND at least 26" overall length. [thumbsup]

Did you happen to have any issues putting the forearm on from the Knoxx stock? When I put it on my 500a, the forearm was an absolute bitch to get on. Couldn't even put the nut back on as there is no room. Interested to see if you had the same experience

Mossberg 500 forearm tubes actually come in two different lengths. Midway sells an adapter nut that will allow you to put an aftermarket forearm on one of the new shorter forearm tubes. I had to do that when I swapped mine out.

Yes, I had the forearm issue, and their tech support suggested that I Dremel out the offending area, and that would NOT affect the lifetime warranty. Got it in writing.

The issue turns out to be that the five position adjustable rear stock isn't locking in those adjustment positions. When I called them back, and started to realize that they have been making these for a LONG time, and never checking the quality. Someone there presumed (dangerous thing to do) that the plastic molded parts would always be fine. WRONG!

I'm waiting for a call back from them, an it;s looking like there may be a MAJOR RECALL of this stock for the Mossberg.

To have that rear stock not be locking properly in the five positions is dangerous to the shooter.

Even their on line installation video shows the fellow in the video smiling as he adjusts the stock from it's most rearward position to the most forward position, and the locking pin NEVER engages in any of the pin detent locations.

I like the recoil reduction feature, but that only works if the pins lock the stock.

I'll report back as soon as I hear back from them.

I had to do the Dremel treatment on mine. I don't think the adapter nut would have worked in my case - there simply wasn't enough clearance.

Oh, I should probably mention that I also had to dremmel mine. I actually don't have the Knoxx fore end. I have the Knoxx stock mounted and a Hogue fore end, but I needed to both dremmel out the fore end and use the adapter nut.

No, I got it at Cabelas in Scarborough, ME on Saturday. They had a bunch of them, but I am betting that they are all defective. No word from Blackhawk! yet, but I am expecting a recall.

Just got this:

-------------
Thank you for your correspondence in regards to your Knoxx SpecOps Adjustable shotgun stock. Please be assured there is no on going problem with the pin engagement on our Knoxx stocks. The reason the man in the video could move the stock back and forth was because he is pressing the adjustment lever on the butt pad. Your stock is covered under a lifetime warranty. If you send your stock in using the RMA you were given; I assure you we will take care of your issue. Our stock does have over 4” of adjustments with the ability to lock into all five holes. I keep 2 Knoxx SpecOps Adjustable shotgun stocks in my drawer as well as on my shotgun at home; and I have had no issue with any of them locking into place. I apologize for your experience and if you have any further questions do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

"HONOR. As A Way Of Life."

He's full of crap. Their moldings suck.

Just checked mine. Locks in all 5 positions perfectly. Did you take the buttstock off (the portion that slides) and look at the holes?

Yeah, the pin that threads into that little round nut, which is activated by the lever..... is threaded too far onto the nut, and never engages any of the holes. Never even hits the surface that is flush with the top of the holes. I tried grabbing it all with pliers to loosen the nut but it's "welded" on there too tight. Probably Loctite. Sending it back with a RMA. Just gonna send them the rear stock, since I don't wanna have to whittle another fore stock.
