Hey all - I just recently joined Woburn Sportsman (couple months ago).. I really enjoy shooting rifles at distance.

Unsure of which rifle to get.

I’ve read a lot on the following 1. Tikka t3x 2. Bergara wilderness Sierra and 3. Ruger American Gen 2 as well as 4. The CVA Cascade.

Of those choices, what do you like.. I’m leaning towards the Tikka or the Bergara. I just have no first hand experience with either.

Thanks in advance

I dont have any experience with any of them except cycling a Tikka at the store, but I"m sure they'll all get the job done at 200yds ( and beyond ) .

some things you may want to consider are aftermarket support like chassis, barrels, triggers, etc. if you want to change something down the road. Bolt throw ( 60-90 deg ) , barrel length, twist rate, diameter , are factors as well if you plan on shooting longer strings.

I own two Bergara B14s and a CVA Cascade. Looked into Tikka and Ruger American Gen 2s as well. I'd go Tikka and Bergara if price wasn't the deciding factor. Those Rugers are great for the money but you'll have way more aftermarket parts available with Tikka and Begara. The CVA Cascade is simply a hunting rifle. It's light, compact and inexpensive. Great for lugging around but not really a fun range gun.

Here's one of my Bergara B14 BMPs in 6.5CM. I switched out the chassis for a KRG Bravo, added an Arca rail, spigot mount and got a M81 cerakote. It shot lights out at precision shooting course I took up at Ridgeline. It'd be a great range gun because of the thicker barrel profile and overall beefiness. We shot 300ish rounds over two days and I didn't notice any significant thermal drift or vertical stringing. It's been such a great off the rack rifle that I bought two of the same.

Done a lot of reading and watching YouTube if I’m being honest. Seems like great value and exceptional precision for the cost. Almost on the same tier as high end rifles.
Ok, let me rephrase: what kind of shooting do you imagine doing? Off a bench? Prone? Prone with a bipod? Offhand? Longer ranges someday or stick to 200Y? Do you imagine you’ll want shoot highpower? Ever going to hunt with it?

How much experience do you have? At 200Y you might gain more with a cheaper rifle and more ammo.

Have you considered Savage rifles? They punch above their price point.

Are you considering used guns, or just new?

Do you like to shoot iron sights, or only with a scope?

I just purchased a used Tikka T3X Lite this past summer. I got it in .270 win. and lefthanded.
I like it a lot, even using it hunting over my Browning X-Bolt in 7mm08.

Honestly. A good savage will be far more accurate than you are when you're starting out (and in my case, for many years after) when you only have 200 to stretch out and a savage will leave money in the budget to invest in good glass which you can take with you, if you get good enough to notice the difference between the savage and a tikka at 200

The tikka is a great rifle. One of the smoothest factory actions I've ever felt. It's ridiculous. You're worried about after market but honestly the tikka will compete with custom rifles at 1/5th the price out of the box. Buy the tikka and good glass and spend the rest on about 10 years of practice ammo.

Tikka t1x , at 200yds you are taxing that limits of that gun and caliber. Or a CZ457 whatever rustles you Jimmie’s

.308 200yds is nothing and you’ll get tired of spending 1.50+ a rd for no challenge. Now if it’s for hunting different story.

Next option is .223/556…if you already have an AR then build a new upper with glass.

Howa barreled action with a bravo is a good budget option.

I plan to shoot off a bench and prone with a bipod. I want to shoot longer than 200 if possible.

I have been going to the range quite frequently, I wouldn’t consider myself that experienced but I’m happy with my groupings.

I have never hunted but I would like to someday. I have been looking at .308 or 6.5 creedmor. I already have an AR in 5.56 and a Sig Spear Lt in 5.56 as well.

I want a bolt action rifle (should have made that clear). I don’t know why I didn’t mention savage, that was on my list as well. I am open to used but prefer new, I also prefer scope.

I have an older Savage in 5.56 with a Leupold scope, but the range I shoot at is only 100 yards. the picture of the target is 5 rounds at 100.
Pretty decent for me.
