my AR consistently shoots up and to the left even when using a bench rest. i've adjusted the piss out of the sights and this does not improve. the rifle has the old school A1 carry handle and sights.

is there a way to kind of set the sights to a default position and then start from there? last week i had this same problem but not as bad, i messed with the sights during the week and only took the rifle out today and i don't think i should have touched the signts.

i'm also considering saying screw iron sights and getting some nice optics. [laugh]

Come to an Appleseed. You'll learn how to do IMC: inches, minutes, clicks.

1) How many inches do you need to move the group? Let's say it's 3"

2) How many minutes is that? 1 MOA (minute of angle) is 1" @ 100 yards, 2" @200 yards, 0.5" @ 50 yards. Let's say you're shooting @ 50 yards. Then it's 6 MOA

3) What is 1 click on your rifle? I'm not sure on an AR, on my M1 it's 1 click = 1 MOA. So I'd have to adjust my sight 6 clicks.

i'll have to check up on what the clicks are measured in on the sights.

pretty much i was always shown click up, down, left, or right, no real mention of why.

i can't really shoot below 50 yards at my range, i might be able to set up a stand with the target on it but i am not sure if the ones they have are used elsewhere and if they want me shooting them full of holes.

Put it at twice the distance and adjust half as much as indicated.

i wish i didn't burn so many rounds today and that i'd asked around about this first. i'd like to be right back out there tomorrow but ammo is expensive.

does anyone know what the "default" setting on the A1 carry handle sight is on the 1-5 scale?

Its fine to zero the AR at 50 yards, and many people would say that is preferable to doing it at 25 meters. If you do 50 yards, the flight path of the bullet will be more reasonable for reliably hitting vital areas on a human from 0 to 300 yards. For example, if you zero at 25 meters and then switch to 100 yards, you'll find the impacts 6" high or so, which is kind of annoying. It'll only be 2ish inches higher if you zeroed at 50 yards and then fired at 100 yard target. More info here:

i couldn't resist and i went back out to the range an hour or so ago determined to get the rifle dialed in right. i met up with some people who were there and we gave the sights a workout.

brought it down a bit too far and i slowly began walking the shots back on target.

finally with the last three rounds i brought with me i landed the three in the center of the target. the black diamond in the center of the target is center mass on the paper behind it.

i am confident the rifle is properly zeroed now and i think all i'd have to work on from here on out is sight picture and breathing. overall i was pretty psyched to land those three rounds with iron sights.

thank you to walter and aubrey if you post on NES! [cheers]
