I have a chance to purchase a NIB HK Mk23 45 acp pistol. It is in the bag with 4-12 round magazines, slot for the can instructions etc. I have never shot one before but I do love 45, I have 3 Colts a SW and a Kimber Team Match now. The price is around $2100. So I am looking for a little advice, it is my understanding they are inported at the rate of only 10-15 a year. I have not seen a NIB one in years. So I am open for suggestions.[thinking]

No such thing as a HKM24. You're most likely talking about the Mk23 Socom pistol in 45acp. If so, it's an absoultely outstanding shooter and I love mine. However, to the best of my knowledge there are no preban mags available for it, so if you have the same hi-cap issues we do in Mass, buyer beware.

Lots of info here as well.

I have a friend with 2 of them and I have one. One of his is the older model like mine which has the original SOCOM finish and the other one. Newer slides are sporting the std USP finish which is more durable to wear, but not as weather/salt/corrosion proof. Given I doubt you will be swimming in the ocean with your Mk23 and once the finish wears, it's corrosion resistance is useless anyhow, I would go with a later NIB one instead of waiting for a early model. Unless you desire the original finish for collecting purposes, I would go with that. In free states I have seen them for less but I don't know what laws are at play in CT. In MA I paid 2K for mine but my friend in NC paid $1800 for the one he had new (since moved to CA and had to leave both with his dad in NC). The price is inline however given the extra 2 mags which go for $75 a piece. I have no idea how many they import or manufacture every year but I doubt it is many given the price tag.

On the open market the price used to be about $1700-1900. In MA, believe it or not, the price usually isn't much higher, because the demand for these guns is pretty low.

Whatever you do though, I hope you're not trying to rationalize buying one of these things- there is no practical reason to own one- so if you're buying one, the only reason should be that you want it badly enough that you can't resist, or you're an HK collector. I own one and like it, and probably will never sell it, but I'll also be the first person to tell someone that it's not practical for much of anything outside of being a range toy or collector piece- Although I -do- use it as a backup gun for bowling pins, because when one of my 1911s dies on the line I know the MK23 will always work... then again, my Sig P220 is "that" reliable, too. (And the P220 is 1/3rd the cost, you just lose a little muzzle velocity. )

I had a Mark 23 and eventually sold it. While it did have a certain cool factor to it, I had to admit that I'd never pick it as my go-to gun. Within the realm of HK large bore pistols, I preferred the full size USP in .45 ACP. It offered the same capacity as the Mark 23, in a considerably smaller packeage. The capacity is the only reason I'd choose the USP over my P220. reliability and accuracy are equal.
If you want the ability to add a 'can" (not sure what CT allows), you might consider waiting for a USP Tactical. It won't be cheap, but I think it offers all the Mark 23 benefits without the massive size.

I can get a can here in CT and these are coming in with right hand threaded barrels.
I always wanted on and now I am not sure if I should take the plunge.

Can't you just get a regular full sized USP .45 and get a threaded barrel for it? The rear sights on the Mark 23 are adjustable if that matters to you. I think it's a nice pistol, I don't think I would pay that much for it. I'll stick with the regular full sized USP's.

US cans are generally right handed, sigs and USPs (I just found this out recently) are left handed (common in europe). YHM and others sell cans in both, but keep that in mind when you shop. The MK 23 is right handed and std US since look who commissioned it. If you just want a can, go with the sig or USP. The MK 23 is good if you want it for what it is.

I pretty much agree with all of the above. I have shot a few of these over the years. The first thing that comes to mind when you pick it up is MASSIVE. Shoots great, recoil is negligable.
I have also shot this with a suppressor, and that is an amazing combo. The gun really seems to have been made with the pairing in mind and designed around that Knight's can. If you don't have access to a suppressor or plans for going that way, I'd opt for a full size usp (or usp tactical).
If you really want it and have to have it. It still is a very very cool shooter..

I would make sure you've held one before. I have a friend with one and not everyone that holds it likes it.

Me personally, I would get it. They are awesome.
