I'm hoping to pick up a M44 Mosin Nagant this weekend at the Marlboro show but I honestly have zero knowledge on older Mil-Surplus weapons. I'm looking for a "shooter" I dont care about matching numbers or any of that crap.... What do I need to look for to get a good usable firearm? What should I be looking to spend? ( approx )

Check the bore for pitting, corrosion, etc. Most 7.62x54R is corrosive, and if someone shot it before and didn't clean it, they might have left a mess for you.

If it still has cosmoline on it, that means it hasn't been shot since import - a good sign.

Nagant style rifles have many variants, As long as the bore is clean and not rotted to sheet, I took a shot and bought one off GB was the same price as anything else out there for its listed condition. I recieved a very clean rifle with a mint bore and very nice muzzle with very little wear. I also got a sling, oil bottle, bayonet, ammo pack and some clips. 127.00 shipped to my FFL. Was a 1927 iveske(sp.) hex reciever laminated stock. If I cant get to the show I am going to shoot it. I am wary of the counter bored muzzles, dont forget to buy some ammo.

Yes the 32acp cylender for the nagant pistol is nice to have. although I sold my nagant pistol rather quickly after getting one the 32acp ammo was easier to find than the proper nagant ammo.

M44's are a boatload of fun...I hit the M44 jackpot with mine. It was a cruddy, goopy mess for $75.00, but when I steamed the cosmo away, it looked like brand new...Just unblieveable. I bought a 91/30 in the group buy and have been thinking about selling it. It's a great gun, but I shoot the M-44 99.9% more....It's a whole lot of awesome...
